At one point, there were fewer than 4,000 employees.<\/p>\n<p>Staffing shortages at the NWS led to multiple offices closing and limited operations.<\/p>\n<p>However, these hirings will not make up for all the lost personnel.<\/p>\n<p>Cuts to the agency have raised concerns that it is not prepared for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/energy-and-environment\/3420069\/hurricane-season-what-to-know-cuts-to-weather-agencies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">hurricane season<\/a> or other major weather events. Staff reductions have also been criticized in the wake of the deadly flooding in central Texas earlier this year. The NWS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/hgx\/office_staff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">office<\/a> in Houston, which is vulnerable to extreme flooding and hurricanes, remains without its top three leadership positions.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has additionally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/in_focus\/3407309\/weather-agencies-reshaped-under-trump-hurricane-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">proposed<\/a> cutting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/noaa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a>&lsquo;s budget by 20%.
