Whether it&rsquo;s weaponizing the legal system to sideline their opponents, overturning voter-approved ID laws, or trying to scrap the Electoral College entirely, Democrats treat every election loss as a problem to be solved &mdash; by changing the rules. But let Republican voters in Texas elect lawmakers who &mdash; in compliance with a recent DOJ directive &mdash; draw new district maps and Democrats clutch their pearls. But it&rsquo;s not redistricting that threatens &ldquo;democracy&rdquo; (in actuality, our constitutional republic), it&rsquo;s Democrats&rsquo; never-ending crusade to manipulate the election rules until they guarantee permanent power.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty-seven Texas House Democrats <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/08\/04\/texas-dems-whine-about-redistricting-from-illinois-the-most-gerrymandered-state-in-the-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">abandoned<\/a> the state on Sunday and headed to Illinois, New York, and Massachusetts to protest a new redistricting proposal. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called a special legislative session to vote on new maps that would fall in line with both a recent Department of Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PhilJankowski\/status\/1943058471168962808\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">finding<\/a> that four districts were unlawfully gerrymandered on racial grounds as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/06\/13\/democrats-could-lose-seats-in-congress-after-biden-doj-gambled-on-a-local-commissioner-seat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fifth Circuit Court ruling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats decided to flee the state to avoid voting on the maps. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;re leaving Texas to fight for Texans,&rdquo; Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu said in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bradj_TX\/status\/1952112239714168859\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement<\/a>&nbsp;on Sunday. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re not walking out on our responsibilities; we&rsquo;re walking out on a rigged system that refuses to listen to the people we represent.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/briantylercohen\/status\/1950592607794704853\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> &ldquo;everything&rdquo; is on &ldquo;the table&rdquo; to &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovPritzker\/status\/1952428496187437290\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fight back<\/a>,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/aug\/04\/jb-pritzker-illinois-texas-democrats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">and<\/a> that this is &ldquo;about rigging the system against the rights of all Americans for years to come.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>California Gov. Gavin Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GavinNewsom\/status\/1952135037207695633\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> &ldquo;this is what fighting for our democracy looks like.&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcra.com\/article\/california-newsom-congressional-redistricting\/65514436\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Newsom called<\/a> it a &ldquo;five-alarm fire for democracy in the United States of America.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>But for all the screeching the left does about &ldquo;democracy,&rdquo; they sure have had no problem upending it when it delivers outcomes they don&rsquo;t like. <\/p>\n<h2>Voter ID Laws<\/h2>\n<p>In March of 2024, Huntington Beach residents approved a ballot measure that would require voters to present identification in order to vote in municipal elections. Surely Newsom, who believes so much in &ldquo;democracy,&rdquo; would support the will of the voters, right?<\/p>\n<p>Wrong. <\/p>\n<p>In October, Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/10\/01\/newsom-signs-law-barring-huntington-beach-voters-from-deciding-their-own-voter-id-laws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">signed into law<\/a> legislation that <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240SB1174\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prohibits<\/a>&nbsp;&ldquo;a local government from enacting or enforcing any charter provision, ordinance, or regulation requiring a person to present identification for the purpose of voting or submitting a ballot at any polling place, vote center, or other location where ballots are cast or submitted, as specified.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>This came <em>after<\/em> the state &mdash; which cares <em>so<\/em> much about &ldquo;democracy&rdquo; &mdash; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/california-sues-huntington-beach-over-voter-id-referendum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sued<\/a> Huntington Beach over voter ID.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, voter ID laws are popular nationwide &mdash; and opposed by Democrats nationwide.<\/p>\n<h2>Lawfare<\/h2>\n<p>Lawfare was perhaps the single most defining term of the 2024 election. <\/p>\n<p>Trump turned himself in for an unprecedented mugshot in Georgia in 2023 after far-left District Attorney Fani Willis charged him and more than a dozen others over their objections related to the certification of the 2020 election. Notably, as reported in these pages by <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/12\/19\/georgia-get-trump-case-likely-over-after-fani-willis-and-her-entire-team-are-disqualified\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tristan Justice<\/a>, &ldquo;Democrats had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/13\/second-j6-hearing-criminalizes-republicans-for-election-objections-after-democrats-made-them-for-decades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">made<\/a>&nbsp;similar challenges against election outcomes&nbsp;for decades. In fact, Democrats objected to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/fact-check-did-democrats-object-more-states-2016-republicans-2020-1561407\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more states<\/a>&nbsp;in the 2016 election than Republicans did in 2020, but none faced criminal charges.&rdquo; Ultimately, Willis &mdash; along with her entire team &mdash; was disqualified from prosecuting Trump after a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >scandals exposed numerous improprieties<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, Trump spent the first half of 2024 tied up in the courts because of lawfare. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg &mdash; who campaigned on a &ldquo;get-Trump&rdquo; agenda, accused Trump of wrongly classifying alleged payments to his then-lawyer Michael Cohen to purchase the silence of pornographer Stormy Daniels as legal fees rather than campaign expenses. Trump was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/31\/guilty-trump-verdict-will-keep-good-people-from-running-for-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">convicted<\/a> on 34 phony charges.<\/p>\n<p>Trump was also ordered to pay a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/27\/ny-judges-scrutinize-troubling-450-million-penalty-in-trump-fraud-case-no-one-lost-any-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$454 million penalty<\/a> in a separate case for a &ldquo;crime&rdquo; in which there were no victims and no one was financially hurt. <\/p>\n<p>And President Joe Biden&rsquo;s own <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/11\/12\/jack-smith-ditching-his-case-against-trump-is-not-a-concession-its-a-coverup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Justice<\/a> waged a multi-year <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/this-week-in-lawfare-land\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lawfare<\/a> campaign against Trump.<\/p>\n<h2>Electoral College<\/h2>\n<p>After Trump swept both the electoral college <em>and <\/em>the popular vote, Democrats rushed to call for the abolition of the electoral college. <\/p>\n<p>Sens. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Peter Welch, D-Vt., said they want to &ldquo;restore democracy&rdquo; by destroying one of the Constitution&rsquo;s foremost safeguards against tyranny. Instead, the resolution would provide for the direct election of both the president and vice president by national popular vote: in other words, tyranny of the majority. <\/p>\n<p>Failed vice presidential candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/10\/09\/in-calling-for-axing-the-electoral-college-tim-walz-tells-swing-state-voters-to-get-lost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tim Walz<\/a> also endorsed abolishing the electoral college, saying &ldquo;we need national popular vote.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Removing Opponents From The Ballot<\/h2>\n<p>The Supreme Court was forced to issue a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/04\/unanimous-scotus-smacks-down-colorado-lawfare-states-have-no-power-to-kick-trump-off-ballot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unanimous ruling<\/a> last year to make clear that states do not have the constitutional authority to boot Trump off the ballot. Left-wing activists in Colorado, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/01\/03\/trump-appeals-ruling-to-keep-him-off-maine-ballot-by-dem-who-was-disappointed-he-wasnt-impeached\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Maine<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/02\/29\/illinois-judge-kicks-trump-off-the-ballot-says-any-votes-for-him-must-be-suppressed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Illinois<\/a> attempted to remove Trump from the ballot, with Colorado&rsquo;s left-wing Supreme Court ruling Trump was ineligible to appear on the ballot.<\/p>\n<p>For a party that loves &ldquo;democracy,&rdquo; they sure had no problem trying to remove their opponent from the ballot and strip voters of their right to choose. <\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.
