Seats\">mid-decade redistricting<\/a>. Thier absence denied Governor Greg Abbott and Republicans the quorum needed to advance a GOP-favored redistricting plan aimed at increasing Republican congressional seats. The sergeant-at-arms has been ordered to secure the attendance of the absent Democrats, possibly through arrest, though the warrants currently apply only within Texas. Many of the Democrats are staying temporarily in Illinois, with some in New York and Boston. In response to arrest threats, the Democrats defiantly said, &#8220;Come and take it.&#8221; New York Governor Kathy Hochul publicly supported the fleeing texas Democrats, calling them &#8220;brave soldiers&#8221; and describing the redistricting fight as a political &#8220;war.&#8221; Texas house Speaker Dustin Burrows affirmed the constitutional requirement for lawmakers to attend sessions but refrained from commenting on the legality of removing members who fled. There are consequences for dereliction of duty.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;To ensure compliance, I ordered the Texas Department of Public Safety to locate, arrest, and return to the House chamber any member who has abandoned their duty to Texans,&rdquo; the governor added. &ldquo;This order will remain in effect until all missing Democrat House members are accounted for and brought to the Texas Capitol.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>At a press conference in Texas, Burrows responded to questions from the<em> Texas Newsroom <\/em>on whether he agreed with Abbott that, by leaving the state, Democrats have forfeited their offices.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You have asked me a legal question,&rdquo; he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/lmcgaughy\/status\/1952464160622576030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"told\">told<\/a> the outlet. &ldquo;As a lawyer, I try not to give legal answers without actually studying and knowing all of the facts in the law. What I can tell you is this, I appreciate the governor offering his full cooperation assistance in that of the DPS to help us do what we can do to establish quorum and basically fulfill our constitutional obligation of showing up and addressing the issues on the call.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Burrows said the Texas Constitution says members &ldquo;shall&rdquo; show up, and the House &ldquo;will complete its required duties,&rdquo; whether tomorrow or next week.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/house\/3489594\/texas-house-advances-newly-drawn-gop-congressional-map\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TEXAS HOUSE ADVANCES NEWLY DRAWN CONGRESSIONAL MAP THAT FAVORS GOP<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Several Democrats traveled to Illinois, while the remainder traveled to Boston and New York. Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) gave a press conference on Monday with the absentee state Democrats, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/state\/3490111\/new-york-kathy-hochul-texas-democrats-fled-redistricting-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">praising them as &ldquo;brave soldiers&rdquo;<\/a> of democracy and saying the redistricting plan on behalf of Republicans has started a &ldquo;war.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have not indicated that they plan on returning to the state anytime soon, though Hochul said the lawmakers in New York were leaving Monday.
