The Democrats&#8217; absence has deprived the Texas House of the quorum needed to pass legislation, specifically aimed at preventing the approval of new congressional maps that would likely give Republicans five additional U.S. House seats. Abbott cited legal authority to remove absent members and warned against soliciting funds to evade fines imposed for quorum violations, suggesting such actions could constitute bribery. Rather than doing their job and voting on urgent legislation affecting the lives of all Texans, they have fled Texas to deprive the House of the quorum necessary to meet and conduct business.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This truancy ends now. The derelict Democrat House members must return to Texas and be in attendance when the House reconvenes at 3:00 PM on Monday, August 4, 2025. Before Writing About Elected Officials\">elected state office<\/a>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Democrats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/democratic-lawmakers-texas-plan-literally-abandon-posts-force-failure-gop-led-voting-reform-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pulled a similar stunt<\/a> in 2021 to block passage of a voting-reform bill.<\/p>\n<p>The quorum for the Texas state House, as specified in <a href=\"https:\/\/statutes.capitol.texas.gov\/Docs\/CN\/htm\/CN.3.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Article III, Section 10 of the Texas Constitution<\/a>, is two-thirds of its members, which means at least 100 out of 150 total elected representatives.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2023, Texas state House rules demand a $500 per day fine for lawmakers who break a quorum, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/08\/03\/texas-democrats-quorum-break-redistricting-map\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Texas Tribune<\/a> reported.
