As of a recent Monday morning, the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline was $2.87 statewide, nearly unchanged from the previous month and just slightly higher than at the end of last year. This price remains over 25 cents below the national average despite North Carolina having one of the highest fuel taxes in the country. Diesel prices averaged $3.54 per gallon, slightly higher than a month ago but lower than a year ago. National averages for unleaded gas and diesel are $3.15 and $3.72 respectively, both down from last year. The state follows EPA rules requiring summer blend fuel, which typically adds about 10 to 15 cents per gallon to prices. North Carolina has more than 8 million combustion engine vehicles and over 100,000 registered electric vehicles (EVs). the average EV charging rate in the state is 33.4 cents per kilowatt-hour, below the national average, reflecting an affordable cost for electric vehicle owners. Regional price variations exist, with Fayetteville having the cheapest unleaded gas and Durham-Chapel Hill the most expensive. The state’s motor fuel taxes, set at 40.3 cents per gallon, are among the higher rates nationally and fund transportation infrastructure projects via dedicated highway funds.

Transportation energy prices consistent with July 4th

(The Center Square)—Transportation energy costs in North Carolina mirror the midsummer holiday a month ago.

Monday morning’s average cost for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline was $2.87 statewide, within tenths of the same as a month ago and just a penny higher than Dec. 31.
