\t\t\t\t}); \t\t\t} \t\t<\/script> <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If you&rsquo;re lucky enough you can sometimes see them in hordes crossing the roads at certain times of the year,&rdquo; McCamish said.<\/p>\n<p>While a tarantula bite can be painful, its venom isn&rsquo;t toxic to humans, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwf.org\/Educational-Resources\/Wildlife-Guide\/Invertebrates\/Tarantulas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Wildlife Federation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Still, McCamish recommends leaving a tarantula alone if you see one.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/investigation-reveals-animal-seen-right-fatal-plane-crash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wild animal<\/a> &mdash; it doesn&rsquo;t want to be picked up and loved and hugged,&rdquo; he told USA Today. &ldquo;In general the species is very docile, but if you were to handle one they could bite you.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Tarantulas are roaming the U.S. as mating season begins. They can jump as high as two feet! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tNch7DiW2B\">pic.twitter.com\/tNch7DiW2B<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; USA TODAY (@USATODAY) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USATODAY\/status\/1950217357265105162?\">July 29, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>If it faces a threat, a tarantula will put its weight on its hind legs and expose its fangs, according to the National Wildlife Federation.<\/p>\n<p>If that doesn&rsquo;t deter the threat, the tarantula may shoot urticating hairs at its attacker.<\/p>\n<p>Although the barbed hairs would merely irritate a human, they can kill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/sanctuary-founder-100-rescued-animals-die-suspicious-fire-active-investigation-underway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">small animals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In truth they&rsquo;re gentle, ecologically valuable animals,&rdquo; McCamish said. &ldquo;Mostly they&rsquo;re interested in escaping from confrontations &mdash; especially with something they know could squish them.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>McCamish said if you see one walking about, it&rsquo;s likely a male, as the females usually wait near their burrows for a mate.<\/p>\n<p>In the winter, tarantulas burrow in a state of torpor, which is similar to hibernation.
