The exhibit had temporarily included details about Trump’s two impeachments in 2021,which was meant as a short-term update reflecting current events. However, the museum decided to revert this section to its 2008 version, aligning it with other parts of the display that have not been updated since then. A museum spokesperson stated that a future updated exhibit will cover all presidential impeachments comprehensively.

This decision came amid a broader smithsonian assessment aimed at addressing concerns about ideological bias, following a directive from the Smithsonian board of Regents and influenced by a 2025 executive order from former President Trump. The order accused major cultural institutions like the Smithsonian of promoting progressive ideology rather than factual history and led to efforts to remove “improper, divisive, or anti-American ideology” from exhibits.

The move drew criticism from Democrats, notably Senator Adam Schiff, who emphasized the importance of remembering Trump’s impeachments. Meanwhile, the Trump management and supporters praised the Smithsonian’s efforts to update displays to reflect what they consider American greatness and to remove divisive content. The article also notes that Trump is the only U.S. president to have been impeached twice, with previous impeached presidents including Andrew Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Bill Clinton.

Smithsonian removes mention of Trump in impeachment exhibit after review of bias content

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History removed references to President Donald Trump in an exhibit about impeachments last month, after undergoing an internal review for “political or partisan influence.”

In September 2021, the museum added a temporary label including content about Trump’s impeachments to a display that had not been otherwise updated since 2008.
