to President Donald Trump &mdash; a disappointing realization for her that she admitted she &ldquo;did not see coming.&rdquo; She then pivoted to insinuating that the Trump administration is usurping its authority, specifically citing its efforts to dissolve the Education Department.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We designed our democracy with three independent coequal branches of government,&rdquo; Harris said to Colbert. &ldquo;When you see that the president of the United States is trying to get rid of the Department of Education, and Congress has the role and responsibility to stand in the way of that? And they&rsquo;re just sitting on their hands, and then they go on recess because they don&rsquo;t want to deal with transparency?&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;And the Supreme Court says that he could ignore the law that established it,&rdquo; Colbert added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;But the Supreme Court, we knew what they were doing,&rdquo; Harris said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;But the Supreme Court basically gave whoever would be president&hellip;immunity,&rdquo; Harris added. &ldquo;So, we&rsquo;re not surprised what the Supreme Court is doing. And God, thank those members of the Court who write brilliant dissents and remind us of what the democracy and the rule of law is supposed to be.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the interview, Harris bemoaned the country&rsquo;s current political atmosphere and called the system &ldquo;broken.&rdquo; She expressed disappointment that, in her opinion, the nation&rsquo;s checks and balances were not working efficiently. It was one of the reasons she gave for her decision not to run for governor of California.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Recently, I made the decision that, for now, I don&rsquo;t want to go back in the system,&rdquo; Harris said. &ldquo;I think it&rsquo;s broken. As fragile as our democracy is, our systems would be strong enough to defend our most fundamental principles.
