Makary highlighted the FDA&#8217;s &#8220;Make America healthy Again&#8221; (MAHA) initiative, originally from the Trump administration and led by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., aimed at curing chronic diseases and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/olympic-gold-medal-figure-skater-sarah-hughes-decides-against-run-for-ny-congressional-seat\/\" title=\"Sarah Hughes, Olympic gold-medal figure skater, opts out of NY congressional race.\">reducing healthcare costs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Makary stressed the need for more cures and treatments for diseases such as type 1 diabetes, advanced cancers, PTSD, ALS, and Alzheimer&#8217;s, advocating for addressing root causes like nutrition rather than focusing primarily on medications. He criticized the medical system&#8217;s heavy reliance on drugs, suggesting more funding for school nutrition and cooking education rather of widespread drug use.<\/p>\n<p>The FDA recently approved several natural food colorings and plans to phase out <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >synthetic petroleum-based dyes<\/a>,with major food companies joining the effort. Makary also voiced caution about the safety claims of birth control pills, noting risks frequently enough under-communicated to women. He mentioned ongoing FDA reviews of drugs like mifepristone, amid debates about its safety and contrasting claims by organizations such as Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n<p>Makary further addressed political interference in scientific funding, citing millions spent on politically charged research like transgender hormone studies on animals. He pledged to encourage civil discourse to combat politicization and lamented the dismissal and career damage faced by those presenting dissenting views on transgender ideology, notably within medical organizations. The MAHA&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/02\/20\/trumps-whole-of-government-approach-to-maha-is-the-holistic-health-strategy-we-need\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">slogan<\/a> represents an initiative by the Trump&nbsp;administration &mdash;&nbsp;pioneered by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.&nbsp;&mdash; to end chronic diseases and reduce health care spending.<\/p>\n<p>Makary said he&rsquo;d &ldquo;like to see more cures&rdquo; and new treatments for type one diabetes, stage four cancers, PTSD, ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig&rsquo;s disease), and Alzheimer&rsquo;s. He also emphasized the importance of studying the &ldquo;root causes&rdquo; to find cures for increasingly common health issues like cancer, obesity, and Alzheimer&rsquo;s by starting with basic nutrition.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We have this fixation on drugs,&rdquo; Makary said.&nbsp;&ldquo;Maybe we should be funding more school lunch programs and talking about cooking classes instead of just insulin and Ozempic for every six-year-old in America.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The FDA&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-approves-three-food-colors-natural-sources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">approved<\/a> three natural food colors in May, and Makary said they will &ldquo;probably approve two more in the next couple of months.&rdquo; In April, the FDA&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/press-room\/hhs-fda-food-dyes-food.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> &ldquo;a series of new measures to phase out all petroleum-based synthetic dyes from the nation&rsquo;s food supply.&rdquo; In June, Kraft Heinz and General Mills&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/06\/18\/kraft-heinz-general-mills-join-list-of-companies-removing-artificial-dyes-from-their-products-amid-maha-efforts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> steps to eliminate artificial colors from their products.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We have to think differently and creatively and get beyond this approval process that was designed in the 1960s,&rdquo; Makary said.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about his thoughts about women being told to take birth control, Makary said, &ldquo;I worry that young women are never told that these pills increase the risk of benign liver tumors or blood clots.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If someone tells you a pill is 100% safe, run for your life,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Birth control is not the only drug marketed to women as &ldquo;safe&rdquo; while posing serious health risks. Earlier this year, an analysis of insurance claims found that the FDA&rsquo;s adverse events rate prediction for mifepristone, the nation&rsquo;s most popular abortion pill, is 22 times higher &ldquo;than what the FDA and Danco Laboratories, manufacturer of mifepristone pill Mifeprex, suggest,&rdquo; The Federalist&rsquo;s Jordan Boyd&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/04\/28\/study-rate-of-serious-or-life-threatening-complications-after-abortion-pill-is-22-times-higher-than-fda-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/learn\/abortion\/the-abortion-pill\/how-safe-is-the-abortion-pill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">continues<\/a> to claim the abortion pill is &ldquo;safer than Tylenol.&rdquo; In May, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpartnership.org\/rhw-rfk-jr-orders-mifepristone-review-as-anti-abortion-groups-push-for-ban\/#:~:text=The%20review%2C%20he%20said%2C%20was,it%20from%20the%20market%20entirely\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ordered<\/a> a review of mifepristone. Makary&rsquo;s comments at the event come just days after he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/fda-chief-has-no-plans-abortion-pill-policy-changes-continues-safety-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">confirmed<\/a>&nbsp;an &ldquo;ongoing review&rdquo; of the drug.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Amid Trump&rsquo;s efforts to cut waste, fraud, and abuse in the federal government, the administration identified millions of taxpayer dollars going to fund National Institute of Health studies with clear&nbsp;political&nbsp;undertones &mdash;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/articles\/2025\/03\/yes-biden-spent-millions-on-transgender-animal-experiments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">including<\/a>&nbsp;$455,000 to test so-called &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nih-funds-transgender-animal-studies-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"NIH funds transgender animal studies - Washington Examiner\">gender-affirming hormone therapy&#038;rdquo<\/a>; on mice.&nbsp;Like the FDA, the NIH falls under the umbrella of the Department of Health and Human Services.&nbsp;When asked by The Federalist what the FDA is doing to remove politics from the stream of scientific funding, Makary said he will &ldquo;promote civil discourse.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Makary acknowledged that there has been an &ldquo;injection of politics into the scientific funding&rdquo; within the &ldquo;last five years.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You have never seen the dismissal of people who have different views on transgender ideology, as you have in the recent American Academy of Pediatrics,&rdquo; he said, adding, &ldquo;anybody that has a different point of view is immediately dismissed from the committee.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Some careers have been destroyed,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m very concerned about it.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The tide has begun to shift around transgender ideology,&nbsp;in particular with an increase in public outcry against doctors performing harmful trans surgeries on&nbsp;minors.&nbsp;Last month, SCOTUS&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/07\/10\/this-scotus-session-confirmed-the-vibe-shift-on-transing-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ruled<\/a>&nbsp;that Tennessee has the right to ban such procedures. Last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/06\/science-keeps-obliterating-the-lefts-favorite-transgender-narratives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">internal&nbsp;files<\/a> from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health&nbsp;made it clear &ldquo;that the practice of transgender medicine is neither scientific nor medical.&rdquo;&nbsp;Not long after, a prominent independent review in the U.K.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/04\/10\/prominent-u-k-doctors-independent-review-finds-no-good-evidence-supports-chemically-castrating-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">found<\/a>&nbsp;that there is &ldquo;no good evidence&rdquo; to back up the use of opposite-sex hormones in gender-confused children.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Abigail Nichols is a correspondent for The Federalist.
