Chilean grandpa<\/h2>\n<p>On July 18, <em>The Morning Call<\/em>, a local Pennsylvania newspaper, published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcall.com\/2025\/07\/18\/luis-leon-allentown-grandfather-ice-guatemala\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">an article<\/a> reporting that 82-year-old Luis Leon, a green-card holder from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/chile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Chile<\/a> residing in Allentown, was allegedly taken by ICE officers and &ldquo;secretly deported&rdquo; to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/guatemala\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Guatemala<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The story in question relied heavily on accounts from family members who said the ordeal started on June 20 when ICE agents handcuffed Leon and &ldquo;led him away without explanation&rdquo; while trying to replace his lost green card at a United States Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Allentown grandfather&rsquo;s family was told he died in ICE custody. Then they learned he&rsquo;s alive &mdash; in a hospital in Guatemala, they say <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xBd5TqatDE\">https:\/\/t.co\/xBd5TqatDE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; The Morning Call (@mcall) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mcall\/status\/1946332815999557953?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 18, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/cdn-cgi\/scripts\/5c5dd728\/cloudflare-static\/email-decode.min.js\"><\/script><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>His wife, who speaks little English, was held in the immigration-processing building for 10 hours until she was released to her granddaughter, the family told <em>The Morning Call<\/em>, an Allentown-based outlet and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcall.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">the Keystone State&rsquo;s third-largest newspaper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Leon&rsquo;s family did not know his whereabouts for approximately a month, saying he &ldquo;disappeared without a trace into the American immigration system.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>At one point, relatives were reportedly informed by a dubious source that he had died in ICE custody.<\/p>\n<p>Days after Leon&rsquo;s alleged arrest, a woman claiming to be an immigration lawyer called his wife, insisting she could help bail him out, but didn&rsquo;t disclose where he was or her connection to the case. That same suspicious caller dialed again weeks later and said he&rsquo;s dead.<\/p>\n<p>The family&rsquo;s communications with the mysterious woman eventually ceased. Then, they learned Leon was alive and had supposedly turned up in a Guatemalan hospital.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is unclear whether Leon ended up in that Central American country deliberately or by mistake,&rdquo; <em>Morning Call<\/em> reporters wrote, citing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3451537\/supreme-court-trump-immigration-allowed-deport-third-countries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">a Supreme Court ruling<\/a> paving the way for federal immigration authorities to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/doj-mexican-national-lied-about-sexually-abusing-girl-to-secure-naturalized-u-s-citizenship\/\" title=\"DOJ: Mexican National Lied About Sexually Abusing Girl to Secure Naturalized U.S. Citizenship\">deport criminally convicted illegal aliens<\/a> to a country other than their native nation.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3451537\/supreme-court-trump-immigration-allowed-deport-third-countries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">SUPREME COURT ALLOWS TRUMP TO DEPORT IMMIGRANTS TO &lsquo;THIRD COUNTRIES&rsquo; FOR NOW<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has since issued a press release to &ldquo;set the record straight&rdquo; on the widely shared story, which was subsequently picked up by legacy media such as&nbsp;The Daily Beast,&nbsp;The&nbsp;Guardian, and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-independent.com\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/ice-deported-grandpa-green-card-b2792290.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">The Independent<\/a><\/em>, all of which ran with the &ldquo;secretly deported&rdquo; narrative.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;ICE has not deported Luis Leon &mdash; a Chilean national &mdash; to Guatemala, as his family members have said,&rdquo; DHS disputed.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Another HOAX!<\/p>\n<p>Luis Leon was never deported by ICE.<br \/>Luis Leon did not die in the custody of ICE.<br \/>&nbsp;<br \/>Our ICE agents are already facing an 830% increase in assaults against them. The journalistic malpractice must end. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nEMlxSYYFt\">pic.twitter.com\/nEMlxSYYFt<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Homeland Security (@DHSgov) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DHSgov\/status\/1947419896226451962?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 21, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Addressing the apparent arrest, the Department of Homeland Security said, &ldquo;This claim is completely false,&rdquo; about Leon&rsquo;s purported detention during a green card replacement appointment. &ldquo;There is no record of the man appearing at any green card appointment in or around the area of Philadelphia on June 20, 2025.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2025\/07\/21\/dhs-sets-record-straight-ice-never-deported-medias-allentown-grandfather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">a statement<\/a>, DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin called the case &ldquo;a hoax&rdquo; and its surrounding news coverage &ldquo;journalistic malpractice&rdquo; for failing to corroborate facts with federal officials first.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;ICE never arrested or deported Luis Leon to Guatemala. Nor does ICE &lsquo;disappear&rsquo; people &mdash; this is a categorical lie being peddled to demonize ICE agents who are already facing an 830% increase in assaults against them,&rdquo; McLaughlin said. &ldquo;This was a hoax peddled by the media, who rushed to press without pausing to corroborate the facts with DHS. This was journalistic malpractice.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Guatemalan government&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcheck.cl\/2025\/07\/21\/luis-leon-chileno-de-82-anos-fue-deportado-desde-estados-unidos-a-guatemala-falso\/\" target=\"_blank\">denied<\/a>&nbsp;that Leon had ever been deported from the United States.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MigracionGuate\/status\/1947116664270594345\" target=\"_blank\">On X<\/a>, the Guatemalan Inst<\/span>itute of Migration, which coordinates with ICE on all deportations to Guatemala, said it never encountered any arrivals matching Leon&rsquo;s name, age, or nationality, nor received anyone of South American origin.<\/p>\n<p>In February, Guatemala struck a deportation deal with the U.S., agreeing to accept deportees originally from other Central American countries; however, the agreement did not cover Chileans.<\/p>\n<p>As for other factual discrepancies, Leon&rsquo;s kin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcall.com\/2025\/07\/25\/luis-leon-chile-allentown-grandfather-photos-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">told<\/a> <em>The Morning Call<\/em> that he had survived torture at the hands of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet&rsquo;s regime and accordingly was granted political asylum in America circa 1987. DHS, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2025\/07\/21\/dhs-sets-record-straight-ice-never-deported-medias-allentown-grandfather\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">said<\/a>, &ldquo;ICE&rsquo;s only record of this individual entering the U.S. is in 2015 from Chile under <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/us-visas\/tourism-visit\/visa-waiver-program.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">the visa waiver program<\/a>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/world\/3458735\/communist-jeannette-jara-wins-chile-left-wing-presidential-primary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">COMMUNIST WINS CHILE&rsquo;S LEFT-WING PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcall.com\/2025\/07\/21\/luis-leon-allentown-grandfather-story-hoax-ice-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">a follow-up report<\/a> from <em>The Morning Call<\/em>, Leon&rsquo;s granddaughter, Nataly, said<em> <\/em>she had found him in the Guatemalan hospital recovering from pneumonia and traumatized by the past events.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">A Chilean journalist later&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcall.com\/2025\/07\/21\/luis-leon-allentown-grandfather-story-hoax-ice-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a>&nbsp;<em>The Morning Call<\/em>&nbsp;that a doctor at the hospital in Guatemala City, where Nataly, the family spokesperson, claimed to have visited her grandfather, had no record of him.<\/span> The reporter said a man by the same name and date of birth as Leon died in Santiago, Chile, six years ago. He showed a copy of the 2019 death certificate to <em>The Morning Call<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcheck.cl\/2025\/07\/22\/foto-atribuida-a-luis-leon-supuesto-migrante-chileno-deportado-a-guatemala-es-falsa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">a Chilean fact-checking site said<\/a> photographs provided to and subsequently published by <em>The Morning Call<\/em> purportedly depicting Leon were instead of a man named Manuel Gonz&aacute;lez, who died in 2021. Gonz&aacute;lez&rsquo;s son previously posted one of the now-circulating pictures on Instagram as a posthumous tribute to his deceased father.<\/p>\n<p>Following the DHS fact-check, the family stopped speaking to the press and asked for privacy, <em>The Morning Call<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcall.com\/2025\/07\/21\/luis-leon-allentown-grandfather-story-hoax-ice-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Daily Kos<\/em>, a liberal blog focused on Democratic Party politics, admitted in the fallout that they &ldquo;got played.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The tale had all the right ingredients for viral outrage&mdash;an innocent victim, a faceless bureaucracy, a system that&rsquo;s failed before,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2025\/7\/22\/2334663\/-Hoax-in-the-Headlines-The-Fake-ICE-Story-That-Spread-Like-Wildfire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><em>Daily Kos <\/em>reflected<\/a>. &ldquo;But when the dust settled and the facts came in, the only thing left was a cautionary tale about how fast fiction can sprint past the truth.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >left-wing outlet advised readers<\/a>: &ldquo;The next time you see a story that fits your worst fears a little too perfectly, hit pause. Ask for receipts. Don&rsquo;t be the mark.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Migrant mother &lsquo;kidnapped&rsquo; by ICE bounty hunters<\/h2>\n<p>In Los Angeles, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/investigations\/3435253\/who-is-funding-anti-ice-activists-in-los-angeles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">ground zero of the anti-ICE uprisings<\/a>, an illegal immigrant from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/Mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mexico<\/a> is accused of orchestrating a fake&nbsp;ICE&nbsp;&ldquo;kidnapping,&rdquo; allegedly to generate public sympathy and solicit donations.<\/p>\n<p>Yuriana Julia Pelaez Calderon, a 41-year-old Mexican national unlawfully living in South Los Angeles, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-cdca\/pr\/mexican-national-charged-federal-criminal-complaint-staging-fake-immigration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">federally charged<\/a> last week with conspiracy and making false statements to federal officers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/immigration\/3476401\/illegal-immigrant-federally-charged-for-faking-ice-kidnapping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"><strong>ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT FEDERALLY CHARGED FOR FAKING ICE &lsquo;KIDNAPPING&rsquo;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On June 30, an attorney representing Calderon&rsquo;s family held&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/usaocdca\/posts\/yuriana-julia-pelaez-calderon-41-of-south-los-angeles-is-charged-with-staging-a-\/1121085830044439\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a press conference<\/a>&nbsp;announcing that bounty hunters had kidnapped her five days earlier at a parking lot outside a Jack in the Box restaurant before she was turned over to an ICE staffer and presented with voluntary self-deportation paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>Calderon refused to sign the papers and demanded to speak to an attorney, the family lawyer said. &ldquo;She was punished&rdquo; as a result and allegedly held hostage in a warehouse at an undisclosed location.<\/p>\n<p>The news conference garnered&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ICEgov\/status\/1946284906801230229\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">national media coverage<\/a>. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) started searching for Calderon over the holiday weekend.<\/p>\n<p>HSI agents ultimately tracked Calderon down in the parking lot of a Bakersfield shopping plaza. Upon apprehension, Calderon allegedly continued to falsely claim she was taken and detained with others.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities allege that video surveillance, including footage of Calderon leaving the Jack in the Box parking lot and getting into a nearby sedan, as well as telephone records, show that she concocted this made-up story.<\/p>\n<p>Calderon allegedly created what law enforcement believes to be fabricated photos of her &ldquo;rescue,&rdquo; doctored to look like she was abused while in ICE custody, and planned to hold a press conference on July 6 to rake in more GoFundMe donations and obtain other benefits.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">FAKE NEWS&#129525;<\/p>\n<p>Politicians and media outlets ran with the made-up story of an illegal alien, Yuriana Julia Pelaez Calderon, being &#8220;kidnapped&#8221; by federal agents and held hostage.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out, her entire story was a lie meant to scam Americans out of their money. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2PSxvJDYoc\">pic.twitter.com\/2PSxvJDYoc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (@ICEgov) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ICEgov\/status\/1946284899280781498?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 18, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Calderon remains in U.S. immigration custody and is expected to make an initial appearance in the coming weeks before a federal court in downtown Los Angeles.
