the order added.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Surrendering our cities and citizens to disorder and fear is neither compassionate to the homeless nor other citizens. My Administration will take a new approach focused on protecting public safety.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The new directive will allow federal agencies to increase drug <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-trump-admin-clear-homeless-encampment-blocking-project-years-making\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enforcement<\/a> and help states restart their institutionalization processes.<\/p>\n<p>Trump was far from the first official to notice that the shift in how we treat homelessness and vagrancy has been a disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Vern Pierson, the district attorney of El Dorado County, California, penned a commentary <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/commentary\/2019\/03\/hard-truths-about-deinstitutionalization-then-and-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">piece<\/a> for Cal Matters a few years ago describing how a movement toward deinstitutionalization in Europe spread across the pond in the 1960s. That was followed decades later by racial justice movements leading to fewer prisoners.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The result: fewer inmates, and significant increases in homelessness and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/suspect-in-fatal-attacks-on-homeless-in-d-c-nyc-named-we-got-our-man\/\" title=\"Suspect in Fatal Attacks on ... in D.C., NYC Named: \u2018We Got Our Man\u2019\">untreated mental illness<\/a>,&rdquo; he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As someone with more than 27 years in the pursuit of justice, I worry for the people on the streets, and for the future victims of crime.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Pierson admitted that the institutions which once housed mentally unwell people were by no means perfect.
