This move follows similar bans in Florida, Alabama, South Dakota, Mississippi, Nebraska, and Indiana. The Texas legislation, supported by bipartisan lawmakers and signed by Governor Greg Abbott, aims to protect the state’s traditional cattle industry and address consumer health concerns. The bill highlights potential risks such as market disruption, labeling transparency, contamination, and long-term health effects.

While states adopt bans, the federal government under the Trump and Biden administrations has taken the opposite approach by working to regulate and approve lab-grown meat products. The FDA and USDA have authorized companies like Upside Foods,Good Meat, and Wildtype to sell cell-cultured meat and seafood in the U.S., marking the U.S. as the second country globally after Singapore to legalize lab-grown meat production.
