This practice violated state consumer protection laws and potentially federal consumer financial protection laws. As part of the settlement, HCA agreed to pay nearly $2.9 million in total, including over $75,000 in restitution to affected Nevada nurses and $786,500 in penalties to the state. The nurses involved were required to sign training Repayment Agreement Provisions (TRAPs) as part of their apprenticeship program with HCA, a practice common among healthcare employers nationwide. The settlement aims to prevent employers from burdening nurses with unlawful debt and supports workers’ ability to seek better pay and conditions.HCA operates 186 hospitals across 20 states and the UK.

Attorneys general announce settlement over training nurses

(The Center Square) — One of the nation’s largest hospital systems has decided to settle after investigations by Nevada, California and Colorado determined it was forcing new nurses to repay training costs if they left the company within two years.

The company, called HCA, was found to have violated state-level consumer protection laws, with possible federal consumer financial protection law violations as well.
