and it&rsquo;s not hard to guess why. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a judicial conference in California on Thursday, the Obama appointee <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JCNSeverino\/status\/1948780609305784758\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">discussed<\/a> the &ldquo;threats to personal safety&rdquo; and an &ldquo;endangerment of judges.&rdquo; She specifically referenced the (leftist-led) <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/05\/10\/lawmakers-slam-doj-for-refusing-to-protect-supreme-court-justices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">threats and demonstrations<\/a> that came about following the leak of the high court&rsquo;s 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/2021\/19-1392\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Dobbs<\/em> decision<\/a> overturning <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/roe-v-wade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roe v. Wade<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-894024610\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&ldquo;That&rsquo;s something that my court dealt with &hellip; a few years ago when <em>Dobbs<\/em> came down. When some of my colleagues, like my colleagues on the majority side, were confronted with protests outside their houses, including houses with children in them,&rdquo; Kagan said, while also mentioning the gunman arrested for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/08\/politics\/brett-kavanaugh-attempted-assassination-plea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">attempting<\/a> to assassinate Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;That is scary stuff,&rdquo; she added. <\/p>\n<p>It&rsquo;s nice to see Kagan criticize the threats and attacks against her Republican-appointed colleagues. It would have been even nicer had she emphatically done so back when it mattered. <\/p>\n<p>As not-so-subtly indicated by Kagan herself during Thursday&rsquo;s conference, the <em>real<\/em> reason for her sudden outspokenness on the issue appears to be her anger with President Trump and conservatives&rsquo; verbal criticisms of left-wing activists and judges&rsquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/judicial-coup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weaponization<\/a> of the legal system to stymie the president&rsquo;s policy agenda. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking in general terms, Kagan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/supreme-court\/justice-elena-kagan-urges-judges-not-intimidated-increase-threats-rcna220884\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">acknowledged<\/a> that judges are &ldquo;fair game for all kinds of criticism, strong criticism, pointed criticism, but vilifying judges &hellip; is a step beyond and ought to be understood as such.&rdquo; The Obama appointee subsequently encouraged judges not to allow such pressures &mdash; which she dutifully classified as &ldquo;threats&rdquo; &mdash; to affect their jurisprudence.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In the face of these sorts of threats to an independent judiciary, judges just need to do what they are obligated to do, which is to do law in the best way they know how to do, make independent, reasoned judgments based on precedent, based on other law, to not be inhibited by any of these threats,&rdquo; she said. <\/p>\n<p>Kagan&rsquo;s remarks echo comments issued by her fellow Democrat-appointed colleagues, Associate Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson. <\/p>\n<p>In what she called an &ldquo;act of solidarity,&rdquo; Sotomayor <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/05\/09\/dear-justice-sotomayor-your-left-wing-partisanship-is-showing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">appeared<\/a> at an event hosted by the left-wing American Bar Association in May, during which she encouraged attendees to &ldquo;stand up and be heard.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Right now we can&rsquo;t lose the battles we&rsquo;re facing,&rdquo; Sotomayor said, seemingly referencing conservatives&rsquo; critiques of leftists&rsquo; judicial coup. <\/p>\n<p>Jackson <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/05\/02\/after-years-of-leftist-threats-against-justices-kbj-decides-trump-is-the-real-threat-to-democracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">espoused<\/a> similar sentiments while speaking at a judicial conference in Puerto Rico that same month. While not referencing Trump by name, the Biden appointee hyperbolically claimed, &ldquo;The threats and harassment are attacks on our democracy, on our system of government. And they ultimately risk undermining our Constitution and the rule of law.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>All three Democrat appointees dissented in the high court&rsquo;s recent <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/06\/27\/supreme-court-nukes-nationwide-injunctions-against-trumps-birthright-citizenship-order\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trump v. CASA<\/a><\/em>  decision. In that case, the majority <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/24pdf\/24a884_8n59.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deemed<\/a> that nationwide (or &ldquo;universal&rdquo;) injunctions &ldquo;likely exceed the equitable authority that Congress has given to federal courts,&rdquo; restricting lower courts&rsquo; ability to universally block a specific law or policy for the entire country. <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Shawn Fleetwood is a staff writer for The Federalist and a graduate of the University of Mary Washington.
