Jim Cooper<\/a> (D-TN) and then-congressional hopeful <a href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/fecimg\/?10991423435\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Brett Carter<\/a> are both Waller alumni.<\/p>\n<p>According to financial disclosure receipts, Crenshaw&rsquo;s big-dollar donations, dating back to <a href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/fecimg\/?94015311901\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">1994<\/a> and as recent as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/receipts\/individual-contributions\/?contributor_name=Crenshaw%2C+Waverly&amp;two_year_transaction_period=2014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">2014<\/a>, one year before his judicial appointment, include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/receipts\/individual-contributions\/?committee_id=C00167346&amp;contributor_name=Crenshaw%2C+Waverly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">$16,450<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/receipts\/individual-contributions\/?committee_id=C00010603&amp;contributor_name=Crenshaw%2C+Waverly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">$4,000<\/a> in total contributions supporting the Tennessee Democratic Party and the Democratic National Committee, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Crenshaw, an <a href=\"https:\/\/obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/the-press-office\/2015\/02\/04\/presidential-nominations-sent-senate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Obama appointee<\/a>, donated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/receipts\/individual-contributions\/?committee_id=C00431445&amp;contributor_name=Crenshaw%2C+Waverly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">$4,600<\/a> directly to Obama&rsquo;s 2008 presidential campaign and <a href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/fecimg\/?29933716444\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">$2,000<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/fecimg\/?29935376798\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">earmarked<\/a> for the Obama Victory Fund.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/investigations\/3450590\/progressive-judge-frees-federally-charged-anti-ice-rioters-portland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">LIBERAL JUDGE WITH HISTORY OF DONATING TO DEMOCRATS FREES FEDERALLY CHARGED ANTI-ICE RIOTERS IN PORTLAND<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a lawyer specializing in labor law, Crenshaw also cut checks boosting <a href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/fecimg\/?13020470998\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">the 2018 reelection<\/a> of Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) and <a href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/fecimg\/?24961320578\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">the failed 2004 presidential bid<\/a> of former Rep. John Edwards (D-NC), among other notable names in the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n<p>Kaine recently requested <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/investigations\/3446090\/virginia-senators-request-3-million-group-helps-illegal-migrants-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">$1.5 million in federal funding<\/a> for an activist organization that helps illegal immigrants find jobs through <a href=\"https:\/\/wearecasa.org\/hire-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">a migrant work placement program<\/a>. The group in question has <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CASAforall\/status\/1869163322291237237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">organized pro-migrant protests<\/a> as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/wjla.com\/news\/local\/casa-fighting-executive-order-president-donald-trump-immigration-maryland-mass-deportations-birthright-citizenship-advocates-migrants-undocumented-border-crisis-lawsuit-protections-pregnant-women\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">&ldquo;resistance&rdquo; efforts<\/a> against the Trump administration&rsquo;s immigration enforcement policies. Edwards ran on <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20071024184602\/https:\/\/johnedwards.com\/issues\/latinos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">&ldquo;fundamentally overhauling&rdquo;<\/a> the U.S. immigration system by <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20080110165652\/http:\/\/www.coxwashington.com\/news\/content\/reporters\/stories\/2007\/02\/07\/BC_EDWARDS_QANDA06.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">providing a pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens<\/a> and clearing the backlog of background checks on migrants already in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, the last year he was contributing to political campaigns, Crenshaw gave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/receipts\/individual-contributions\/?committee_id=C00480384&amp;contributor_name=Crenshaw%2C+Waverly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">$5,200<\/a> to the reelection run of disgraced former Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/al-franken\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Al Franken<\/a> (D-MN), who was later accused of sexually harassing several women, and another <a href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/fecimg\/?14020211815\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">$5,200<\/a> to the 10,000 Lakes Victory Fund, a joint fundraising committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mprnews.org\/story\/2014\/04\/22\/together-franken-and-dscc-raise-36500\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">established by Franken&rsquo;s campaign staff<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3479976\/judge-orders-kilmar-abrego-garcia-released-from-custody\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">JUDGE ORDERS ABREGO GARCIA RELEASED FROM CUSTODY AS TRUMP ADMINISTRATION IS BLOCKED FROM QUICKLY DEPORTING HIM<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This week, Crenshaw issued <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.tnmd.104622\/gov.uscourts.tnmd.104622.96.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">a court order<\/a> freeing Abrego Garcia, an alleged wife-beater and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3382729\/dhs-reveals-evidence-abrego-garcia-ms-13-ties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">gangbanger<\/a> facing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3434113\/abrego-garcia-returning-us-charges-human-smuggling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">federal human smuggling charges<\/a>, from pretrial detention.<\/p>\n<p>Abrego Garcia, who was in the custody of the U.S. Marshals pending a criminal trial, allegedly transported hordes of illegal immigrants within the United States.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.tnmd.104622\/gov.uscourts.tnmd.104622.95.0_2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">a 37-page memorandum opinion<\/a>, Crenshaw said Wednesday he did not find &ldquo;any evidence that there is something in Abrego&rsquo;s history, or his exhibited characteristics, that warrants detention.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3382729\/dhs-reveals-evidence-abrego-garcia-ms-13-ties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">DHS REVEALS EVIDENCE SUPPORTING ABREGO GARCIA&rsquo;S MS-13 TIES<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The pieces of evidence the Government cites to, taken alone or together, warrant a finding that Abrego is, at best, a low risk of nonappearance,&rdquo; Crenshaw said of Abrego Garcia&rsquo;s flight risk. Abrego Garcia, an illegal alien from El Salvador, evaded federal law enforcement detection for years <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/ag\/media\/1396906\/dl?inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">until his apprehension in 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On whether Abrego Garcia is dangerous, Crenshaw weighed the protective orders his wife had filed against him in previous domestic abuse cases, witness statements suggesting he carried guns and drugs during the human smuggling operation, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3382729\/dhs-reveals-evidence-abrego-garcia-ms-13-ties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">his documented ties to the violent Salvadoran gang MS-13<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Noting these factors, Crenshaw ruled that all of the evidence presented &ldquo;is a far cry from showing that Abrego is such a danger to others or the community that he cannot be released with conditions.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This courtroom sketch depicts Kilmar Abrego Garcia sitting in court during his detention hearing on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, in Nashville, Tenn. (Diego Fishburn via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Crenshaw&rsquo;s decision came around the same time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdd.uscourts.gov\/paula-xinis-district-judge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Judge Paula Xinis<\/a>, a district court judge from Maryland who is presiding over Abrego Garcia&rsquo;s wrongful deportation case, <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.mdd.578815\/gov.uscourts.mdd.578815.239.0_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">ordered<\/a> the Trump administration to return him, upon release in Tennessee, to out-of-jail Immigration and Customs Enforcement supervision in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/maryland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Maryland<\/a>, where he was unlawfully living. Such supervised release consists of periodic check-ins with immigration authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Xinis, another <a href=\"https:\/\/obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/the-press-office\/2015\/03\/26\/presidential-nominations-sent-senate-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Obama appointee<\/a>, also<a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.mdd.578815\/gov.uscourts.mdd.578815.239.0_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"> ordered<\/a> that Abrego Garcia be given 72 hours&rsquo; notice if the Trump administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3464490\/kilmar-abrego-garcia-deportation-third-country-doj\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">intends to initiate removal proceedings against him<\/a>, meaning he cannot be immediately deported.
