The lawsuit arises after an off-duty federal Border Patrol officer was shot during an attempted robbery by a suspect who was in the country illegally and had a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/prosecutions-star-witness-in-kyle-rittenhouse-trial-has-a-lengthy-criminal-record\/\" title=\"Prosecution\u2019s Star Witness in Kyle Rittenhouse Trial Has a Lengthy Criminal Record\u00a0\">lengthy criminal record<\/a>.The Trump administration blames New York city&#8217;s sanctuary policies, which limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, for creating an environment that enabled the attack.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that the sanctuary policies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/725-people-have-been-arrested-for-jan-6-capitol-breach-most-hit-for-entering-or-remaining-in-capitol\/\" title=\"725+ People Have Been Arrested For Jan. 6 Capitol Breach, Most Hit For \u2018Entering Or Remaining\u2019 In Capitol\">obstruct law enforcement<\/a> and emphasized that if city leaders do not act to protect citizens, the DOJ will intervene. Mayor Adams, while critical of some sanctuary policies, defended himself by noting that only the New York City Council can change these laws. He also partially blamed former Governor Andrew Cuomo&#8217;s 2019 bail reform laws,which Adams argues have contributed to a &#8220;revolving door&#8221; criminal justice system.<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ contends that New york City&#8217;s sanctuary policies are unconstitutional because they impede federal immigration law enforcement. The Trump administration seeks to revise city laws that prevent local authorities and police from assisting with immigration enforcement. Adams is engaged in a tough battle for reelection against socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani and former New York City Gov. (AP Photo\/Seth Wenig)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Adams, who has criticized aspects of sanctuary initiatives for years, has staunchly defended himself over allegations that he is to blame for the policy, pointing to the New York City Council as the only entity that has the power to change pro-sanctuary laws.<\/p>\n<p>He has also blamed Cuomo in part for the Saturday incident, arguing that the former governor&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >controversial 2019 bail reform law created<\/a> a &ldquo;revolving door&rdquo; in the criminal justice system, allowing criminals to roam the streets.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You know how outraged I am because of Andrew&rsquo;s bail reform laws on how we have this revolving-door criminal justice system,&rdquo; Adams said. &ldquo;I am extremely angry that we have a &hellip; Border Patrol officer that is in the hospital because a person that should have not been on our street was on our street.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ&rsquo;s lawsuit against Adams and New York City argues that the city&rsquo;s policies limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement are unconstitutional.
