The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/house-bill\/1585\/text\">Violence Against Women Act<\/a> was reauthorized in a 244-to-172 vote on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The bill, which expired two years ago due to a government shutdown, would expand victim services and reauthorize grant programs to respond to these types of crimes. The measure would also close the so-called \u201cboyfriend loophole\u201d to prevent people convicted of domestic violence or abuse from owning a gun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c87,000 women, according to the UN, are killed every year,\u201d stated Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.). \u201c50,000 of them are killed by an intimate partner or spouse\u2026that means 137 women die every day by a family member.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It is unbelievable that it has taken this long to reauthorize <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/VAWA?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#VAWA<\/a>.
