NORAD detected the Russian planes,which failed to identify themselves as required when entering the ADIZ,an international airspace buffer designed for national security. In response, NORAD deployed 10 U.S. fighter jets, including F-35s and F-16s, to monitor, intercept, and escort the Russian aircraft out of the zone. Although the Russian planes did not enter U.S. or Canadian sovereign airspace and claimed to be conducting drills, such incursions are frequent. NORAD stated the activity is not considered a direct threat but emphasized its readiness through layered defense systems to protect North America in case of emergencies. The other planes were two Su-35 Flanker fighter jets, reported <em>Air &amp; Space Forces Magazine<\/em>. The Alaskan ADIZ is considered a &ldquo;buffer for air defense,&rdquo; according to <em>Air &amp; Space Forces Magazine. <\/em>And while it is regarded as international airspace, any aircraft flying through the Alaska ADIZ is supposed to identify themselves, which the Russian planes apparently did not do.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>NORAD subsequently deployed fighter jets to &ldquo;positively identify, monitor, intercept, and escort them out of the Alaskan ADIZ,&rdquo; <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airandspaceforces.com\/norad-intercepts-russian-bombers-fighters-near-alaska\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> an official from the joint U.S.-Canadian command. It included &#8203;&#8203;two U.S. Air Force F-35s and four F-16s and several other support aircraft, according to <em>Air &amp; Space Forces Magazine<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It&rsquo;s the latest confrontation between U.S. and Russian fighter jets, in which there has been a steady uptick in recent months. In a particular tense interaction in Sept. 2024, a Russian pilot of a Su-35 cut off a U.S. F-16, engaging in what is known as a &ldquo;headbutt maneuver,&rdquo; <em>Air &amp; Space Forces Magazine<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The conduct of one Russian Su-35 was unsafe, unprofessional, and endangered all&mdash;not what you&rsquo;d see in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/russia-flying-more-armed-aircraft-over-us-bases\/\" title=\"... flying more armed ... over US bases\">professional air force<\/a>,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airandspaceforces.com\/norad-intercepts-russian-bombers-fighters-near-alaska\/\" title=\"\">said<\/a> NORAD commander Air Force Gen. Gregory M. Guillot about the close call. <\/p>\n<p>According to reports, the Russian aircraft flew in the ADIZ for over three hours.
