Led by representatives Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) and Lauren Boebert (R-CO), the legislation aims to help smaller communities by improving mail delivery speed, emergency response times, and ensuring accurate tax revenue allocation. Boebert’s bill, which passed by a vote of 278-121, proposes 68 new ZIP codes, while Diaz-Balart’s bill adds eight more. These changes address problems like slower emergency responses, miscalculated sales tax, and confusion in official records. The effort has bipartisan support and follows similar, though previously stalled, initiatives. If approved by the senate, the postal Service would have 270 days to implement the new codes, benefiting numerous towns that have struggled with outdated or shared ZIP codes impacting local services and economies.

The House votes for 76 new ZIP codes: What cities would see changes to their postal digits

The House passed two bills Monday night that would authorize the United States Postal Service to create 76 new ZIP codes for communities nationwide.

These two bipartisan bills, led by Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) and Lauren Boebert (R-CO), could help smaller communities by speeding up mail delivery and emergency response times. Diaz-Balart‘s bill passed by voice vote, and Boebert’s legislation passed by 278-121 vote.

Recommended Stories

Johnson says no House vote on Epstein file release before August recess

‘AOC funds genocide’: Graffiti defaces campaign office as AOC rebukes ‘lies’ over Israel vote

DC’s sole congressional delegate slams ‘outrageous’ House appropriations bill

This is not the first proposed ZIP code upgrade. However, the bill lost momentum, and the Senate session ended before lawmakers could vote.

Boebert’s 2025 bill includes 17 more districts than her original plan, with eight other districts proposed by Diaz-Balart.

Both bills have support from both sides of the aisle, with 32 co-sponsors. Many co-sponsors are from the impacted districts, hoping to solve timeliness issues with updated ZIP codes.

U.S. Sens. If the petition is denied, the community cannot appeal the decision for up to 10 years.

In the past nine years, Diaz-Balart has proposed five provisions to add new ZIP codes, but none have passed in the Senate.
