James Carville, a longtime Democratic strategist known for his candid critiques, wrote an opinion piece in The New york Times describing the party as “constipated,” “leaderless,” “confused,” and a “cracked-out clown car.” He attributes the party’s turmoil to deep divisions between a younger, more left-leaning generation and moderate Democrats, citing disputes over issues like support for Israel and healthcare reforms.Carville warns that this ideological split coudl lead to a “civilized civil war” within the party-a necessary but tough process. He argues that the party needs a unifying “savior” figure,similar to Barack Obama or Bill Clinton,but such a leader is unlikely to emerge until after the 2026 midterm elections. Simultaneously occurring, Carville urges democrats to remain unified in opposing Republicans to regain House seats and set the stage for meaningful change in the 2028 presidential election.

    Read more…

It’s no secret that the Democratic Party is in a relative state of flux following the ignominious end of ex-President Joe Biden’s lone term.

Without a true figurehead and without the House or Senate, the Democrats have seemingly been more focused on infighting than on governing of late.

Even given that, however … took to the Gray Lady to pen a furious opinion piece that began with guns blazing.

(To preface all this, Carville is the same Democratic mind who predicted that Trump’s second presidency had only a month left to live … in February.)

“Constipated. Leaderless. Confused. A cracked-out clown car. Divided. These are the words I hear my fellow Democrats using to describe our party as of late,” Carville wrote.

Then came the kicker: “The truth is they’re not wrong: The Democratic Party is in shambles.”

The reason for such a broken party? Carville contended that the Democratic Party is currently caught between a younger, far more leftist generation and a generation of more “moderate” Democrats, and he said that’s translated to seemingly irreconcilable differences.

One such example: “We are divided along ideological lines: A party that is historically allegiant to the state of Israel is at odds with a growing faction that will not look past the abuses in Gaza and the West Bank. From Medicare for All purists to Affordable Care Act reformists, the list goes on and on.”

Carville made clear that this deep divide is going to force some uncomfortable — albeit necessary — soul-searching from his party.

“The Democratic Party is steamrolling toward a civilized civil war,” Carville contended. “It’s necessary to have it. It’s even more necessary to delay it.”

From here, Carville argued that the “only thing that can save us now is an actual savior, because a new party can be delivered only by a person — see Barack Obama in 2008 and Bill Clinton in 1992.”

There is one glaring caveat to Carville’s call for “an actual savior”: This “savior” is apparently on a time delay.

“No matter how many podcasts or influencer streams our candidates go on, our new leader won’t arrive until the day after the midterms in November 2026, which marks the unofficial-yet-official beginning of the 2028 presidential primary contest. No new party or candidate has a chance for a breakthrough until that day.”

So what’s the Democratic Party to do in the meantime?

“Until then, we must run unified in opposition to the Republicans to gain as many House seats as possible in the midterms, because every congressional seat we gain in 2026 means we will be more likely to bring about change in 2028,” he said.

It’s here where some Democrats may scoff at Carville, as he posited that the only way Democrats can make it to and through the 2026 midterms is if they are unified in opposition to all things Trump.

For many Dems, the party is already doing that.

And for even more Americans, that tactic is simply not working.

       * Name

       *

      * Message

* All fields are required.

Success!

       function firefly_sc() {     if( typeof window.captchaPublicKey==typeof undefined ){      console.error('window.captchaPublicKey is not defined');     }     grecaptcha.execute( window.captchaPublicKey, { action: 'submit_correction' } ).then( function( token ) {      var opts={       action:    'firefly_sc_submit',       name:      document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="name"]' ).value,       :     document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name=""]' ).value,       message:   document.querySelector( '.entry-submit-correction [name="message"]' ).value,       post_id:   firefly_post_id,       cap_token: token      }       var inputs=[ 'name', '', 'message' ];       for( var i=0; i <inputs.length; i++ ) if( ! Here’s a paraphrased version of the provided text:

—

It’s widely recognized that the Democratic Party is currently experiencing significant turmoil following the disappointing conclusion of former President Joe Biden’s single term. Lacking a clear leader and control of both the House and Senate, Democrats appear to be more preoccupied with internal conflicts than effective governance recently. Despite this, one might ask: Has the Democratic Party truly become what a recent New York Times opinion piece called a “cracked-out clown car”? Notably, this harsh critique didn’t come from Republicans or members of Donald Trump’s administration but from James Carville-a lifelong Democrat and key strategist behind Barack Obama’s presidency.

Carville openly criticized his own party in an opinion article for The New York Times. Known for his blunt assessments (he previously predicted Trump’s second term would be short-lived as early as February), Carville described Democrats as “constipated,” “leaderless,” “confused,” and divided-terms he says are commonly used by fellow Democrats themselves. He bluntly stated that these descriptions are accurate: the party is in disarray.

According to Carville, this dysfunction stems from a clash between younger, more progressive members and older, moderate Democrats-resulting in deep ideological rifts. For example, tensions exist between traditional supporters of Israel within the party and newer factions critical of Israeli actions in Gaza and the West Bank; similarly, debates rage between advocates for Medicare for All versus those favoring reforms to the Affordable Care Act. This division will inevitably force difficult but necessary introspection within the party.

Carville warned that Democrats are heading toward an inevitable internal conflict-a “civilized civil war”-which must happen but should also be postponed if possible. He argued that only a transformative leader can rescue them now-the kind who can unify like Barack Obama did in 2008 or Bill Clinton in 1992.

However, there is one major caveat: such a unifying figure won’t emerge until after next year’s midterm elections (November 2026), which marks when serious presidential primary contests begin ahead of 2028. Until then, no new candidate or movement has much chance to break through.

So what should Democrats do meanwhile? Carville urged unity against Republicans to win as many House seats as possible during upcoming midterms because gaining congressional power will increase their chances for meaningful change by 2028. While some may dismiss his call for solidarity around opposition to Trump-something many already claim-the reality is that this approach hasn’t convinced all voters or guaranteed success so far.

—

Let me know if you want it shortened further or adjusted!

https://www.westernjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/James-Carville-on-cracked-out-clown-car-party.jpg
[33651
32923,32512,15823,32171
post-2464803","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-democratic-party","tag-james-carville","tag-nyt","tag-political-commentary
https://www.westernjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/James-Carville-on-cracked-out-clown-car-party.jpg
["GET
