The fearmongering corporate media have rushed to <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >blame decreasing vaccine rates<\/a> and &ldquo;unvaccinated&rdquo; populations. But largely missing from or downplayed in these outlets&rsquo; coverage are important data points and questions about what may be exacerbating the outbreaks.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large\"><figcaption>\n<div class=\"row no-gutters body-xs m-0 text-start\">\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-4\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-8\">\n<div class=\"article-thumbnail-caption d-flex align-items-center justify-content-md-end label-xs mt-15\">         <i class=\"mdi mdi-camera me-10\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i>         <span class=\"visually-hidden\">Image Credit<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/data-research\/index.html\">Screenshot \/ CDC<\/a>       <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/measles-outbreak-us-texas-mmr-vaccine-rfk-144ed193e13de675a750e52a505423e9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> concerns that the outbreak has been worsened by post-Covid &ldquo;vaccine hesitancy&rdquo; and lackluster funding for vaccination programs. CBS acted shocked that HHS Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. &mdash; who, the outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-outbreak-us-map\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a>, &ldquo;has a history of making false and misleading claims about vaccines&rdquo; &mdash; would recommend the measles vaccine. CNN likewise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/health\/measles-cases-us-dg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blamed<\/a> &ldquo;falling vaccination rates&rdquo; and &ldquo;increased travel.&rdquo; An expert <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/shots-health-news\/2025\/07\/09\/nx-s1-5461155\/measles-outbreak-cdc-vaccination-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warned<\/a> NPR that the U.S. may be close to losing its elimination status and blamed this on &ldquo;vaccine hesitancy.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1019868155\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The latest available CDC data <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/data-research\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shows<\/a> a measles vaccine rate of about 92.7 percent for kindergartners in the 2023-2024 school year. This is down 2.5 percent from the 2019-2020 vaccination rate, a modest drop considering the fallout from the CDC pushing and the federal government seeking to mandate the experimental Covid vaccine in 2021. For comparison, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/preview\/mmwrhtml\/00020688.htm?utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vaccination rate<\/a> was between 61 and 66 percent for children between 1 and 4 years old from 1971 to 1985.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, there are currently only <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/measles-outbreak-us-texas-mmr-vaccine-rfk-144ed193e13de675a750e52a505423e9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">35 more<\/a> measles cases than the total number recorded in 2019, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/data-research\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CDC<\/a>. This is still about 800 fewer cases than recorded for the year of 1992 &mdash; the last time the number exceeded 1,300. It is also far lower than the 9,600 cases in 1991. Yet the corporate media continues to drive a narrative of fear based on the point that we are seeing &ldquo;the most&nbsp;measles cases&nbsp;in more than 30 years.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The largest outbreak in the U.S. is in Gaines County in Texas. The Gaines County outbreak began in the area&rsquo;s Mennonite population. Cases in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/07\/21\/texas-measles-outbreak-lessons-learned\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&ldquo;more mobile&rdquo;<\/a> group that often travels to other Mennonite communities reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/05\/08\/texas-measles-spread-oklahoma-new-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">led<\/a> to other outbreaks in Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. technically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/about\/history.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eliminated<\/a> measles in 2000. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/data-research\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to<\/a> the CDC, elimination means &ldquo;there is no measles spreading within the country and new cases are only found when someone contracts measles abroad and returns to the country.&rdquo; The CDC also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/global-measles-vaccination\/data-research\/global-measles-outbreaks\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warns<\/a> that &ldquo;measles can easily cross borders.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"GzLw4vDgl2OWPUKJs3dyebmo5RxM9CpYBhXijS0aknQT\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Here is a good example of bad data visualization<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to tell from this map that Ontario, Canada has almost twice as many measles cases as the entire United States combined <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zHngTDRKdF\">pic.twitter.com\/zHngTDRKdF<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; PoIiMath (@politicalmath) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/politicalmath\/status\/1942630957842063488?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 8, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>It&rsquo;s interesting, then, that the state with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/map-states-texas-highest-number-border-crossings-mexico-america-1920182\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highest<\/a> number of measles cases also has the highest number of illegal border crossings, but, unsurprisingly, corporate media outlets have failed to draw that connection or hastily minimized it. Outbreaks more than five times as large as that of Gaines County currently exist in Canada and Mexico, and the total cases in Ontario, Canada, and in Chihuahua, Mexico, both <a href=\"https:\/\/cori.centerforhealthsecurity.org\/resources\/measles-outbreak-response\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">far exceed<\/a> total cases in the United States in 2025.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large\"><figcaption>\n<div class=\"row no-gutters body-xs m-0 text-start\">\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-4\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"col-12 col-md-8\">\n<div class=\"article-thumbnail-caption d-flex align-items-center justify-content-md-end label-xs mt-15\">         <i class=\"mdi mdi-camera me-10\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i>         <span class=\"visually-hidden\">Image Credit<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/data-research\/index.html\">Screenshot \/ cdc<\/a>       <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Representative Ryan Mackenzie, R-Penn., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/ryan-mckenzie-immigrants-measles-outbreak-2058503\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> Newsweek earlier this year that &ldquo;large-scale migration from countries with low rates of immunization brings down our own nation&rsquo;s average rates and increases our susceptibility to outbreaks.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In Chicago last year, 57 measles cases were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/wr\/mm7319a1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recorded<\/a> in connection with a migrant shelter. A tuberculosis outbreak was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/vaccinating-migrants-us-children-prevented-disease-outbreaks-chicago-shelters-experts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">associated<\/a> with Chicago shelters at the time. In 2023, migrants apparently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/13\/nyregion\/measles-nyc-migrant-shelter.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brought<\/a> measles to New York City. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/71\/ss\/ss7102a1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CDC<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10138615\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">others<\/a> have conducted studies on the prevalence of infectious diseases among immigrants and refugees, including tuberculosis, syphilis, gonorrhea, Hansen&rsquo;s disease, HIV, and hepatitis B and C.<\/p>\n<p>As the spread in Texas slows, officials are already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/07\/21\/texas-measles-outbreak-lessons-learned\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wondering<\/a> if they should have taken a less vaccine-focused approach.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Jacqueline Annis-Levings is a correspondent for the Federalist.
