Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch emphasized that the legislation aims to protect children from online harms such as sex trafficking, sexual abuse, sextortion, and other illegal activities. The law was signed by Governor Tate Reeves after unanimous approval by state lawmakers. However, NetChoice, an industry group representing major social media companies like Meta and Snapchat’s parent company, argues that the law violates privacy rights and free speech. NetChoice is continuing its legal challenge against the Mississippi law and similar laws in other states.

Federal court rules Mississippi can enforce social media age verification law

A federal court ruled Thursday that a Mississippi law requiring social media users to verify their age can go into effect.

A three-judge panel in the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a previous decision by a federal judge that blocked the Walker Montgomery Protecting Children Online Act from going into effect.
