At 67 years old, Smith has no known health issues aside from a history of depression. Her staff reported that after she <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >started feeling ill<\/a>, the Capitol physician recommended further examination at the hospital, where she is being kept for observation as a precaution. She expects to return to work soon. Her temporary absence from the Senate gives Republicans a short-term seven-vote advantage as congress debates changes to a $9 billion rescissions bill. Senator Smith had previously announced she would not seek reelection in 2026 to spend more time with family. Her term ends in January 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Minority Leader Sen.
