The legislation, including the “Criminal Illegal Alien Enforcement Act” (House Bill 318) and the “North Carolina Border Protection Act” (Senate bill 153), would require local authorities to hold suspects for up to 48 hours after ICE notification and establish formal agreements between local agencies and ICE to prevent taxpayer funds from being used for undocumented immigrants. Governor Stein vetoed these bills, citing constitutional concerns over detaining individuals solely on suspected immigration violations.Republican leaders argue the laws are necessary for state safety and accuse Stein of siding with open-border supporters. The measures are expected to face legal challenges similar to those in other states but have strong GOP backing in North Carolina’s legislature, which holds majorities in both chambers.

Republicans in the North Carolina legislature are preparing to override Democratic Gov.
