A New York Times report revealed that Biden did not individually approve each name; instead, after setting general criteria, the pardons were signed off by White house Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, who authorized the use of the autopen. This process allegedly bypassed Biden&#8217;s direct involvement, raising concerns about the legitimacy and legality of the pardons. almost everything.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The president was right to sound the alarm, as it&rsquo;s now clear Biden didn&rsquo;t even see the final list of names &ndash; thousands of people whose sentences he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/pardon\/commutations-granted-president-joseph-biden-2021-2025#17-01-2025-commutation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pardoned or commuted<\/a> &ndash; Rather, after extensive discussion of different possible criteria, he signed off on the standards he wanted.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&ldquo;Biden did not individually approve each name for the categorical pardons&hellip;Rather than ask Biden to keep signing revised versions, his staff waited and then ran the final version thru the autopen, which they saw as&hellip;routine&rdquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TwhbvujB6c\">https:\/\/t.co\/TwhbvujB6c<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4OHRSl93or\">pic.twitter.com\/4OHRSl93or<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Alex Thompson (@AlexThomp) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AlexThomp\/status\/1944546038641217832?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 13, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The Times reported that on Jan. 19 &ndash; Biden&rsquo;s last full day in office &ndash; he held a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-israel-and-hamas-agree-to-ceasefire-proposal-brokered-by-egypt\/\" title=\"BREAKING: Israel And Hamas Agree To Ceasefire; Proposal Brokered By Egypt\">late-night meeting<\/a> with aides to discuss categories of clemency.<\/p>\n<p>An aide to Biden&rsquo;s White House counsel, Ed Siskel, then sent a draft summary of Biden&rsquo;s &ldquo;decisions&rdquo; at 10:03 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>That summary went to an assistant of Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, who forwarded it to Zients himself and another aide.<\/p>\n<p>Then that same assistant sent a final version to another staffer, copying other aides.<\/p>\n<p>Three minutes later, at 10:31 p.m., Zients wrote, &ldquo;I approve the use of the autopen for the execution of all of the following pardons.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>That was it. Biden didn&rsquo;t even approve the final list.<\/p>\n<p>Worse still, the person responsible for the autopen, Rachel Feldman, got the list before Zients even gave the go-ahead.<\/p>\n<p>House Oversight Chair James Comer <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/20250714021443\/https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2025\/07\/14\/biden-defends-autopen-use-white-house#selection-473.0-655.71\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Axios after reading the Times report, &ldquo;The House Oversight Committee will continue pursuing answers about this historic scandal.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>They should.<\/p>\n<p>Because Biden didn&rsquo;t approve those pardons.
