The report alleged that Cheatle gave false testimony to Congress by denying that asset requests were refused. Cheatle refuted these claims, explaining that while mistakes were made adn reforms were underway, the incident was a &#8220;perfect storm&#8221; of failures rather then the result of intentional denials. She emphasized that the secret Service director typically does not handle approval of asset requests directly, and stated that she had indeed ordered additional security, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >including counter snipers<\/a>, for the event. Six agents were suspended following the incident, which involved a gunman who fired at Trump, grazing his ear and killing one person while injuring two others before being shot by a Secret Service sniper. Got Payout In Confidential Deal After Resignation\">director shortly<\/a> after her testimony.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Director of Secret Service is not typically directly engaged in the approval or denial of requests for support; the agency has procedures in place to identify such requirements and requests for additional assets,&rdquo; she wrote, adding that &ldquo;for the Butler rally, I actually did direct additional assets to be provided, particularly in the form of agency counter snipers.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Cheatle wrote that &ldquo;any assertion or implication that I provided misleading testimony is patently false and does a disservice to those men and women on the front lines who have been unfairly disciplined for a team, rather than individual, failure.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Six agents were suspended by the Secret Service for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/columnists\/3469454\/trump-assassination-attempt-butler-one-year-anniversary-few-answers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">failures connected to the assassination attempt<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other senators on the committee also referred to the day as a &ldquo;perfect storm.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/3444699\/timeline-increasing-incidents-political-violence-in-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>POLITICAL VIOLENCE ON THE RISE IN THE US: A TIMELINE OF KEY INCIDENTS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;What happened here was really an accumulation of errors that produced a perfect storm of stunning failure,&rdquo; Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2024\/09\/25\/congress\/senators-find-sweeping-failures-on-trump-shooting-00180841\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">said<\/a> last year. &ldquo;A lot of these individual failings, if corrected at the time, might have prevented this tragedy.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>On July 13, 2024, a 20-year-old gunman, Thomas Crooks, opened fire on Trump from the rooftop of a nearby building during a campaign rally. A bullet grazed Trump&rsquo;s ear and one person was killed, with two others critically injured.
