Count\">county auditor<\/a> due to high COVID-19 infection rates among staff. Hazelo, along with fellow observer Tracy Abuhl, declined to wear masks despite being offered them and were subsequently barred from observing ballot processing without masks. Hazelo was found guilty of second<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >-degree criminal trespass<\/a> and felony unlawful entry, facing possible prison time.Both Hazelo and Abuhl argued they were singled out because they were prominent Republicans in the area. The county auditor, also a Republican, stated the mask policy was necesary to protect staff health. Hazelo is appealing the conviction and has started a fundraising campaign. They were then told that they could not observe the processing of ballots if they did not wear a mask. According to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/irp.cdn-website.com\/6a12d959\/files\/uploaded\/Decl_of_Abuhl_ISO_Mtn_for_PI.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">court documents<\/a>, Abuhl attempted to observe the counting of ballots from the hallway, but could not see most of the room or even the workers nearby, as they were screened by plastic sheeting.<\/p>\n<p>After about 30 minutes, the Elections Supervisor Michele Reagan came into the room and told the plaintiffs that they had to wear a mask, which they protested, arguing they were not breaking any rules and would stay to observe.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Hazelo was found guilty&nbsp;of one count of second-degree criminal trespass and one count of felony unlawful entry into an election facility.<\/p>\n<p>He faces up to a year in prison for the felony conviction and up to 364 days for the gross misdemeanor.<\/p>\n<p>Hazelo posted his reaction to the sentencing on his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mQbyHWJ0Yks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouTube page<\/a>&nbsp;stating, &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t know what to make of it, we&rsquo;re going to appeal it.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>He said that there were other people not wearing masks at the voting center and that he and Abuhl were singled out because they are &ldquo;the two Republican faces of Island County.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Following the conviction, Abuhl said on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/tracy.abuhl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Facebook<\/a>&nbsp;that Island County Auditor Sheilah Crider knew she and Hazelo would reject the masks.
