This surplus, amounting to $27 billion, was largely attributed to a record increase in tariff revenues, which rose to $27.2 billion that month. \t\t\t\t}); \t\t\t} \t\t<\/script> <\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/11\/treasury-posts-unexpected-surplus-in-june-as-tariff-receipts-surge.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNBC<\/a>, tariffs collected on goods imported into the country for sale totaled $27 billion for the month, up from $23 billion in May, and a whopping 301 percent more than the figure from June 2024, when President Joe Biden was in office.<\/p>\n<p>In that month a year ago, the government ran a $71 billion deficit, CNBC reported.<\/p>\n<p>Completing the turnaround, the June 2025 surplus number compared to a deficit in May of $316 billion, according to CNBC. (The deficit in May 2024 was even higher, $347 billion, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/us\/us-treasury-posts-347-bln-deficit-may-2024-06-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reported at the time.)<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiscal.treasury.gov\/files\/reports-statements\/mts\/mts0625.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Treasury Department report<\/a>, tariffs, recorded as &ldquo;Customs duties,&rdquo; were still a small part of the government&rsquo;s revenue.<\/p>\n<p>With the government&rsquo;s largest revenue streams &mdash; including individual and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >corporate income taxes &#038;mdash<\/a>; making up $236 billion of the month&rsquo;s revenues, Social Security and retirement taxes combining for $487 billion in government revenue for the month, the $27 billion in tariffs is comparatively small.<\/p>\n<p>But the difference is substantial, since, according to the financial news website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/news\/economy-news\/us-posts-suprise-27-billion-budget-surplus-in-june-boosted-by-tariffs-4132513\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Investing.com<\/a>, analysts &ldquo;had expected a deficit of $41.5 billion.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>As CNBC put it: &ldquo;Increasing tariff collections are helping shore up the government finances.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In other words, that $27 billion made the difference.
