Economist Neil irwin highlights that economic indicators such as unemployment (at 4.1%), stock market levels, and inflation have remained stable or improved over the past months, countering predictions of recession and economic downturn. Recent legislative developments, like the passage of the “big Stunning Bill,” have also supported the economy. moreover, inflation expectations have decreased back to pre-tariff announcement levels, and tariffs have not yet considerably impacted inflation, partly as trading partners are absorbing the costs. While noting the economy’s complexity and potential future adjustments due to trade policy changes, the overall message is that Trump’s economic approach has, so far, yielded favorable results.

The left-leaning Axios admitted Wednesday that it is so far, so good for President Donald Trump’s economy, despite the dire predictions regarding his tariff policy.

In an article titled “Why everything’s coming up Trump on the economy,” Axios chief economic correspondent Neil Irwin wrote, “Economic, market, and policy developments have been a wind at the president’s back in the last two months. In an article titled “Why everything’s coming up Trump on the economy,” Axios chief economic correspondent Neil Irwin noted that recent economic, market, and policy trends have favored the president over the past two months. The anticipated negative effects of unpredictable policies have not occurred, making critics appear premature-at least for now. Irwin questioned why Trump is intensifying a trade war that seemed inactive by imposing high tariffs on key trading partners and imports like copper and pharmaceuticals-and suggested perhaps there is no better reason not to do so. Three months ago, markets were plummeting, recession warnings were widespread, retailers feared shortages, and tax legislation prospects were uncertain; none of these concerns hold true today. Unemployment has dropped to 4.1%, stock markets are near record highs, and inflation remains stable.

Additionally, Congress recently passed a significant bill dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill,” which Trump signed into law on July 4th. Irwin cautioned that because the U.S. economy is complex, it will take time for businesses to adjust pricing and supply chains in response to major trade policy changes seen in early 2025 and expected soon.

Inflation during Trump’s second term averages an annualized rate of 1.4%, lower than the 1.8% average from 2009-2020 and less than half of Biden’s last 30 months’ rate of 3.1%, not to mention Biden’s initial 18-month rate of 8.6%. CNBC reported Tuesday that Federal Reserve inflation expectations have also declined since Trump’s tariff announcement in April; consumers surveyed in June anticipate inflation at about 3% over the next year-the same as before Trump took office-down from a peak near 3.6% earlier this year.

So far, tariffs have had little impact on most inflation measures according to CNBC reports. White House Senior Counsel Peter Navarro told Fox Business that global markets are absorbing these tariffs without passing costs onto U.S consumers-a phenomenon he described as countries effectively “eating” the tariffs rather than inflating prices domestically-which explains why inflation has remained subdued despite increased trade tensions under Trump’s administration

[33651
7428,9791,4133,5894,3634
post-2457702","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-analysis","tag-axios","tag-news","tag-politics","tag-trump
["GET
