Critics claim the film serves as an anti-Trump, pro-immigration allegory, partly based on Gunn referring to Superman as an “immigrant” during an interview. However, the article argues that this comment was taken out of context by Variety reporter Marc Malkin, known for stirring cultural controversies. Gunn clarifies that the movie is about kindness and is meant for everyone, not a political statement against any group. The article also highlights how some cast members, like Sean Gunn and Nathan Fillion, supported the film’s inclusive message amidst backlash. Ultimately, the piece advises readers to wait until the movie’s release before forming opinions, criticizing premature boycotts fueled by misleading media framing.

If you’ve been hanging around social media for long enough this summer, you’ve probably heard that the new “Superman” movie is supposed to be insufferably woke.

While nowadays you have to be on the lookout for virtually every superhero movie pushing some sort of agenda, I was slightly hopefully for the latest reboot. Mistakes were made.

I’m not going to point out everyone who’s fallen for the pseudo-controversy involving Malkin and “Superman,” but as conservative-leaning fandom site That Park Place noted, this guy basically gave every member of the cast he could get a soundbite from a hefty slice of bait. And James Gunn, in all fairness, didn’t really bite.

So, when Malkin said that the new film is “an immigrant story, it’s a political movie, MAGA today is going nuts,” Gunn clarified that this was in no way a statement about them when asked what he “had to say to MAGA.”

“I don’t have anything. I think this movie is for everyone,” Gunn said, laughing. “I don’t have anything to say to anybody. I’m not here to judge people. Firstly, in case you’re unfamiliar with the Superman backstory, he emigrated to Earth from the planet Krypton in a spacecraft — which, correct me if I’m wrong, but we didn’t really have any set guidelines for interstellar beings arriving in space capsules back in the 1930s. (It’s also worth noting that, under almost any circumstance, having your planet destroyed very legitimately qualifies you for refugee status.)

As for the idea that Superman represents the immigrant experience, that’s one interpretation of the comic — that the character was an inspiration to the legal (can I repeat, legal) immigrant communities trying to assimilate in the first half of the 20th century. This isn’t about him plowing into the border wall in the El Paso sector faster than a speeding bullet to let a caravan of Venezuelan migrants in. Just saying.

Unfortunately for those who were looking at these comments askance, there were people who took the low-quality bait. For instance, James’ brother Sean Gunn, who plays villain Maxwell Lord in the film. Aside from that, this is a man whose career highlights include being Kirk on “Gilmore Girls” and also Kirk on the Netflix “Gilmore Girls” miniseries and also in the viral TikTok clip of him dancing from an early episode of “Gilmore Girls” in character as Kirk. He’s got range, I tell you what.

Anyhow, he said, “My reaction to [the backlash] is that it is exactly what the movie is about” and those who “say no to immigrants are against the American way,” although after some significant leading from Malkin:

Sean Gunn on the MAGA backlash to Superman being called an immigrant: “People who say no to immigrants are against the American way.” pic.twitter.com/XgivaD34PE

— Variety (@Variety) July 8, 2025

And here’s Nathan Fillion, also in the picture, saying, “Somebody needs a hug,” when asked about those recreant MAGA types.

Nathan Fillion on MAGA backlash to James Gunn calling Superman an immigrant: “Somebody needs a hug. These days, it seems like nearly every superhero film carries some kind of political message, but I was somewhat optimistic about this reboot since it’s directed by James Gunn, known for his “Guardians of the Galaxy” films that didn’t heavily push political views. However, conservative media and podcasts have recently highlighted comments from Gunn and some cast members suggesting the movie serves as an anti-Trump, pro-immigration allegory. The New York Post’s headline summed it up: “‘Superman’ director faces backlash for calling the Man of Steel an ‘immigrant’: ‘Superwoke.'” That sounds negative-and maybe it will be-but there’s important context missing. The comment was taken out of context during an interview with Variety reporter Marc Malkin, who has a reputation for stirring culture-war controversies rather than conducting straightforward red-carpet interviews. If you’re unfamiliar with Malkin, he previously pushed similar narratives in interviews about Marvel’s “Agatha All Along,” trying to label it as their “gayest project yet.”

“Agatha All Along” wasn’t exactly aimed at Christian conservatives or suitable for teens; still, despite its reputation and my own initial skepticism about the hype around its so-called “gayest project” status-which I admit I bought into-Malkin tends to bait interviewees into making provocative statements. Many fell for his tactics regarding “Superman,” though James Gunn himself largely avoided taking the bait.

When Malkin claimed the film is “an immigrant story” and “a political movie” causing MAGA supporters to react strongly, Gunn clarified that he wasn’t addressing MAGA directly when asked what he had to say to them: “I don’t have anything… This movie is for everyone,” he said with a laugh. “I’m not here to judge people… It’s a movie about kindness-a value everyone can relate to.”

Gunn also mentioned in another interview that “‘Superman’ is America’s story… an immigrant who came from elsewhere… It emphasizes basic human kindness-a value we seem to have lost.” But this doesn’t specifically target MAGA supporters.

For those unfamiliar with Superman’s origins: He arrived on Earth from Krypton via spacecraft-long before any real-world immigration policies existed-and having your home planet destroyed certainly qualifies him as a refugee under any reasonable definition. Interpreting Superman as representing immigrants isn’t new; many see him as symbolizing legal immigrants assimilating into America during the early 20th century-not someone breaking through border walls or endorsing open borders.

Despite this nuance, some people took Malkin’s bait-including Sean Gunn (James’ brother), who plays villain Maxwell Lord in the film. Known mostly for playing Kirk on “Gilmore Girls,” Sean commented that backlash against calling Superman an immigrant reflects exactly what the movie addresses-that opposing immigrants goes against American values-after prompting from Malkin.

Similarly, Nathan Fillion responded humorously when asked about MAGA critics: “Somebody needs a hug-it’s just a movie.”

Unfortunately, these remarks are being clipped and shared by left-leaning outlets portraying MAGA supporters as overreacting crazily-even though none of these comments reflect final opinions on a film not yet released.

Conservative voices like Kellyanne Conway have criticized such politicization too (“We don’t go to movies to be lectured”), while clips highlighting absurd red-carpet questions by reporters like Malkin get little attention among conservatives.

Whether James Gunn’s Superman ends up more politically charged than Pixar’s recent films remains unknown-it could flop or follow his previous work’s relatively moderate tone.

My advice? Hold off judgment until after seeing the film itself rather than reacting prematurely based on one out-of-context quote amplified by a culture-war provocateur seeking viral moments. If anyone deserves boycott before release day Friday-it should be Marc Malkin after years of sensationalist interviewing-not James Gunn or his cast members trying simply to promote their work respectfully amid controversy

[33651
34247,58706,32490,58707,58600
post-2457292","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-fake-news","tag-immigrant-controversy","tag-media-bias","tag-new-movie","tag-superman-2
["GET
