He suggested this policy could be announced soon, wiht a grace period of about a year to a year adn a half for companies to adjust before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-liberation-day-tariffs-how-they-work-and-who-they-hit\/\" title=\"... &#039;Liberation Day&#039; ...: How they work and who they hit\">tariff takes effect<\/a>. The intention behind the tariffs is to encourage pharmaceutical manufacturing to return to the U.S., leveraging America&#8217;s large market. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick mentioned that detailed plans would be finalized by the end of July. We&rsquo;re gonna give people about a year, year and a half to come in, and after that, they&rsquo;re gonna be tariffed if they have to bring the pharmaceuticals into the country at a very high rate, like 200%,&rdquo; Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;ll give them a certain period of time to get their act together,&rdquo; he added.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">After the announcement, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/08\/trump-threatens-pharmaceutical-tariffs-200.html\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a>&nbsp;CNBC&nbsp;<\/span>that details would come at the end of July.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;With pharmaceuticals and semiconductors, those studies are being completed at the end of the month, and so the president will then set his policies then, and I&rsquo;m going to let him wait to decide how he&rsquo;s going to do it,&rdquo; Lutnick said.<\/p>\n<p>PhRMA, Big Pharma&rsquo;s biggest lobbying group, said pharmaceutical tariffs would be &ldquo;counterproductive.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Every dollar spent on tariffs is a dollar that cannot be invested in American manufacturing or the development of future treatments and cures for patients,&rdquo; Alex Schriver, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/senate-confirms-kathleen-hicks-as-deputy-defense-secretary\/\" title=\"Senate Confirms Kathleen Hicks as Deputy Defense Secretary\">senior vice president<\/a> of public affairs for PhRMA, said in a statement obtained by the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Medicines have historically been exempt from tariffs because they can increase costs and lead to shortages,&rdquo; he added.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">In an April speech, Trump&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3374650\/trump-teases-tariffs-pharmaceuticals-nrcc-dinner\/\" target=\"_blank\">explained<\/a>&nbsp;his logic around pharmaceutical tari<\/span>ffs, saying overseas pharmaceutical companies would &ldquo;come rushing back into our country because we&rsquo;re the big market.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The president has hinted at imminent pharmaceutical tariffs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3401668\/trump-pharmaceutical-drug-tariffs-next-two-weeks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"including in May\">including in May<\/a> when he said they would be announced in two weeks. The analysis estimated that a 25% tariff on foreign-produced drugs would raise drug prices for Americans by more than $50 billion per year, an increase of nearly 13%.
