After the Senate conducted a lengthy “vote-a-rama” that lasted over 24 hours, the bill was taken up by the House. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries employed a tactic akin to a filibuster by speaking for 8 hours and 44 minutes to delay the voting process, setting a record for the longest speech on the House floor.

Despite his efforts to stall the vote and appeal to wavering Republican representatives,Jeffries’ strategy ultimately failed as the bill passed with a vote of 218 to 214,moving on to President Trump’s desk. In response to Jeffries’ lengthy monologue, House Speaker Mike Johnson lightheartedly mocked him, emphasizing the idea that “no speech should be longer than 20 minutes,” and highlighted the importance of honesty in political discourse. The article concludes by noting that while Jeffries may have set a record, the context in which it occurred would likely lead to criticism rather than commendation.

For those of you who like live legislative action to play from your TV or smartphone as background noise to whatever you’re doing, I have bad news for you: The week of the long speeches is over.

After the Senate’s vote-a-rama on the One Big Beautiful Bill reconciliation spending plan lasted for over 24 hours before being passed on Tuesday, the House took it up, with the Democrats trying to stall for time.

They did, thanks to House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries using a tactic similar to the Senate’s filibuster to speak for 8 hours and 44 minutes.

While there is no filibuster in the House, party leaders can speak for what’s known as a “magic minute” without being interrupted. Following a marathon Senate vote-a-rama on the One Big Beautiful Bill reconciliation spending plan that stretched over 24 hours and concluded on Tuesday, the House took up the matter, with Democrats attempting to delay proceedings. They succeeded when House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries employed a tactic akin to a filibuster, speaking for 8 hours and 44 minutes. Although there is no formal filibuster in the House, party leaders can utilize what’s called a “magic minute” to speak uninterrupted. This minute can be extended repeatedly-in this instance, it was extended 523 times-setting a new record for House speeches from 4:53 AM EDT to 1:37 PM EDT, according to The Associated Press. This marks the longest “magic minute” filibuster ever recorded and consequently the longest continuous speech delivered in the House.

While Jeffries had little of substance to say-his entire speech could be summarized in under twelve words: “Spending good, plan bad; Republicans trying to kill people”-he was clearly stalling for time in hopes of swaying undecided Republican votes. After his lengthy address ended at minute 524, House Speaker Mike Johnson responded with humor by referencing Ronald Reagan and adding some touches that Reagan would have appreciated. He began his remarks by dramatically placing a thick binder filled with pages on the lectern before pretending to flip through it while smiling-a move that drew laughter from attendees.

Johnson quipped about Reagan’s belief that no speech should exceed twenty minutes and promised he would respect his colleagues’ time by being more concise than Jeffries had been. He also shared an insightful lesson learned during childhood: it takes much longer to construct a lie than it does to tell a simple truth.

In contrast with Jeffries’ long-winded filibuster filled with fear-mongering aimed at sustaining unsustainable spending for favored Democratic programs, Johnson’s brief yet impactful remarks highlighted more truthfulness than all of Jeffries’ rambling combined.
