She became counselor to the president at the beginning of Trump&rsquo;s second term.<\/p>\n<p>Habba is a mother of three, and described herself as a &ldquo;devout Catholic, a proud first-generation Arab American woman, and a feisty Jersey girl&rdquo; during a speech at the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/rnc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\" Republican National Convention\"> 2024 Republican National Convention<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Habba&rsquo;s relationship with Trump<\/h2>\n<p>Habba and Trump&rsquo;s legal relationship began in 2021, after she reportedly met him at his country club in Bedminster, New Jersey. Shortly after, Trump chose her to serve as his most high-profile lawyer. She later assisted Trump on the campaign trail ahead of the 2024 election.<\/p>\n<p>Habba was a part of Trump&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/live-blog-posts\/trump-lawyer-alina-habba-only-crime-former-president-committed-loving-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"legal team\">legal team<\/a> and defended the then-Republican presidential candidate in his hush-money trial in New York in 2024, when Trump was convicted on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/presidential\/3024113\/trump-guilty-alina-habba-says-trump-met-thumbs-up-verdict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"34 counts\">34 counts<\/a> of falsifying business records.<\/p>\n<p>One of Habba&rsquo;s most prominent moments was clashing with Judge Lewis Kaplan during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2821813\/alina-habba-reaction-donald-trump-carroll-verdict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Trump&rsquo;s defamation trial<\/a>, where a jury ruled the then-former president&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/2821525\/trump-must-pay-83-million-to-carroll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">should pay<\/a> writer&nbsp;E. I really do believe that,&rdquo; Habba said in an interview following her appointment. &ldquo;Hopefully, while I&rsquo;m there, I can help that cause.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Notable moments in her role<\/h2>\n<p>In April, Habba directed government lawyers to investigate Gov.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/phil-murphy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\" Phillip Murphy\"> Phillip Murphy<\/a> (D-NJ), and the state&rsquo;s attorney general, Matthew Plankin, over its immigration policies. <\/p>\n<p>The following month, Habba&rsquo;s office brought criminal trespassing charges against Newark mayor, Ras Baraka, following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/3406996\/newark-mayor-ras-baraka-arrested-protest-lawmakers-stormed-ice-prison\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"his arrest \">his arrest <\/a>outside an immigration detention facility. It&rsquo;s clear that Alina Habba does not meet the standard to serve the people of New Jersey.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>If the Senate doesn&rsquo;t approve her nomination, New Jersey&rsquo;s 17 district court judges could vote to approve her permanent status.
