Following the Fed&#8217;s decision to keep the interest rate unchanged at 4.25 to 4.5 percent in May,Trump publicly urged Powell to lower the rates significantly,suggesting that billions of dollars are being wasted due to his decisions. In a note to Powell, Trump stated, &#8220;you are, as usual, &#8216;too late,'&#8221; highlighting that other countries have lower rates even with higher inflation. <\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s comments were echoed by Republican Senator Bernie Moreno, who claimed that the high rates cost American taxpayers $400 billion annually. The Federal Reserve has previously cut rates twice in late 2024,but it appears hesitant to do so again. That cut was on top of another 25 basis point reduction on Nov. 7, after the election, and a 50-point cut in September.<\/p>\n<p>The Consumer Price Index <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/ted\/2024\/consumer-prices-up-2-4-percent-from-september-2023-to-september-2024.htm#:~:text=Consumer%20prices%20up%202.4%20percent%20from%20September%202023%20to%20September%202024,-October%2017%2C%202024&amp;text=From%20September%202023%20to%20September%202024%2C%20the%20Consumer%20Price%20Index,12%20months%20ended%20February%202021.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had risen 2.4 percent<\/a> year-over-year as of September, which was the same rate it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/pdf\/cpi.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rose as of May<\/a>.
