Many right-wing candidates have opted out of a primary, preferring to go on to election day with several candidates. Left-wing President Gabriel Boric, who is term-limited, voiced hope that the united front would be sufficient to hold back the right-wing tide overtaking the country.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The important thing is that by the end of the day, the progressive sectors are going to be behind a single candidate,&rdquo; he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/chile-picks-jeannette-jara-face-off-against-right-wing-presidential-field-2025-06-29\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">told<\/a> reporters after Sunday&rsquo;s voting.<\/p>\n<p>If elected, Jara would be the first Marxist since President Salvador Allende, elected in 1970, who was famously deposed by a military coup led by Gen. Augusto Pinochet in 1973. A recent <a href=\"https:\/\/en.mercopress.com\/2025\/05\/12\/chile-boric-s-image-plunges-and-matthei-s-soars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"poll\">poll<\/a> found his approval rating at 27%.<\/p>\n<p>Boric&rsquo;s popularity plunged over public <a href=\"https:\/\/mixedmigration.org\/chiles-response-to-migration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"dissatisfaction\">dissatisfaction<\/a> over his handling of crime and immigration, driven by an influx of Venezuelan migrants.
