This status, which provides deportation protections and work permits, will expire on August 3, 2023, with the termination taking affect on September 2, 2023. Noem stated that Haiti is now deemed safe enough for its citizens to return, without elaborating on the criteria for this evaluation. The decision goes against a previous extension of TPS that was set to last until February 2026. The announcement follows a ruling by the Supreme court allowing the trump administration to pause the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrats-ngos-demand-joe-biden-quickly-open-u-s-borders-to-ukrainians\/\" title=\"Democrats, NGOs Demand Joe Biden Quickly Open U.S. Borders to Ukrainians\">humanitarian parole program<\/a> under which these Haitians were granted TPS. The State Department <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/international-travel\/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages\/Haiti.html?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=44031958015&amp;gbraid=0AAAAAqbBk5uTfCG6HIf6E0RwH4sdmAKYD&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwgvnCBhCqARIsADBLZoJmrUbiT7NXtZiG8ynQruIh68LizEEZ1OAk4VWGQONCVhkhEz_bdTYaApYUEALw_wcB#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"currently advises\">currently advises<\/a> Americans not to travel to Haiti &ldquo;due to kidnapping, crime, civil unrest, and limited health care.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Haitian nationals received temporary protected status under a Biden-era humanitarian parole program that allowed over half a million immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela to enter the United States. The program granted CHNV beneficiaries deportation protections and work permits, which will soon be terminated.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving office, former President Joe Biden extended the designation for Haiti to February 2026. Noem revoked Biden&rsquo;s decision and bumped up the end date to Aug. 3. DHS had to make a decision on the designation within 60 days.<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court recently ruled that the Trump administration has the authority to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/supreme-court\/3426631\/supreme-court-allows-trump-administration-end-mass-parole\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"temporarily pause\">temporarily pause<\/a> the CHNV parole program as the case went through the appeals process. The government then sent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3440172\/trump-sends-termination-notices-paroled-migrants-biden-era-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"temporarily pause\">termination notices<\/a> to the more than 500,000 immigrants under the program.<\/p>\n<p>Noem is encouraging affected Haitians to either obtain legal status or use Customs and Border Protection&rsquo;s CBP Home app to report their departure from the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>The app was previously known as the CBP One app, which the Biden administration used to let immigrants schedule appointments at the southern border for their asylum processing. DHS decommissioned and subsequently revamped the app after President Donald Trump took office.<\/p>\n<p>Haiti underwent severe turmoil after the assassination of former President Jovenel Moise in 2021.
