While Yost, a Republican, disapproves of the plan, he stated that he doesn&#8217;t believe it is indeed illegal. Senate Minority Leader Nickie Antonio highlighted the uncertainty about the use of unclaimed funds for private business endeavors. <\/p>\n<p>Republican leaders, simultaneously occurring, asserted that the plan would save the state money and replenish unclaimed funds through tax captures, promising to return $636 million to the state from increased tax revenues. However, economist J.C. Bradbury criticized the funding approach, arguing that such public investments typically do not yield the promised benefits and instead divert resources from other priorities. If they sue, they will lose.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Yost&rsquo;s post came shortly after the law firm DannLaw, which includes former Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann and former state Rep. Jeffrey A. Crossman, announced they have a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/ohio\/article_32238550-0c2a-4dd9-b3b5-221b9c3f4d8f.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suit ready<\/a>&nbsp;if the plan becomes law.<\/p>\n<p>A few hours later, Republicans in Ohio&rsquo;s Senate and House&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/ohio\/article_a9713474-80b5-47f5-a423-32b5caf5c74f.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">easily passed<\/a>&nbsp;a state budget that included the Browns stadium plan over objections from Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Minority Leader Nickie Antonio, D-Lakewood, who is from Cleveland and represents part of the Cleveland area, also questioned the legality of using individual taxpayers&rsquo; funds from private businesses.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We looked through and found the money in the way of Ohioans&rsquo; unclaimed funds,&rdquo; Antonio said during the Senate debate Wednesday. &ldquo;Taking that idea, applying to many sports franchises because clearly there were more waiting in the wings; they are already queuing up. I don&rsquo;t think my colleagues on my side of the aisle have a problem creating a system to be able to discuss how much of a loan it is; the problem is we don&rsquo;t know if it&rsquo;s constitutional to use the funds from unclaimed funds. We&rsquo;re going to find that out, I&rsquo;m sure.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Senate President Rob McColley, R-Napoleon, recently said the state plans to create a tax capture at the site to replenish the unclaimed funds, and the plan &ldquo;saves the state $400 million in debt service.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>McColley also said the tax capture &ldquo;is forecast to return $636 million to the state from incremental tax revenues.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Economist J.C. Bradbury of Kennesaw State University in Georgia, who has extensively studied the public funding of sports stadiums, called Republicans&rsquo; idea&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/ohio\/article_95f13167-5314-43d5-933d-446fe333f032.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&ldquo;willful ignorance<\/a>&rdquo; and said promised benefits rarely, if ever, turn into reality because it diverts spending from other areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3453781\/jd-vance-ohio-republicans-dinner-middle-finger-pink-haired-opponents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">JD VANCE FLIPS MIDDLE FINGER, JOKES ABOUT &lsquo;PINK-HAIRED&rsquo; OPPONENTS DURING OHIO REPUBLICANS DINNER<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is not free money,&rdquo; Bradbury recently told The Center Square. &ldquo;You can&rsquo;t just <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >pull public stadium funding<\/a> out of the air. It has to come from other priorities or out of taxpayers&rsquo; pockets. This isn&rsquo;t forward-thinking, it&rsquo;s willful ignorance.
