The primary candidates include former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is generally seen as the frontrunner despite his controversial past, particularly regarding the COVID-era nursing home scandal. However, a new poll indicates that Mamdani could surpass Cuomo through the city&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/andrew-yang-has-commanding-lead-in-nyc-mayoral-race-poll-shows\/\" title=\"Andrew Yang Has Commanding Lead In NYC ...al ..., ... Shows\">ranked-choice voting<\/a> (RCV) system, which allows voters to rank candidates by preference. If no candidate secures over 50% of first-choice votes, lower-ranked candidates are eliminated in successive rounds until one achieves a majority.This system may result in voters&#8217; first choice not being the final nominee, as seen in the hypothetical simulation where Mamdani could win against Cuomo despite being lesser-known.<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >campaign suggests notable progressive policies<\/a>, such as taxpayer-funded gender surgeries and healthcare for undocumented immigrants, raising concerns among critics about his radical leftist approach. The outcome of the primary could further highlight divisions within the Democratic Party in New York City, squaring a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gaetz-says-johnson-speakership-proves-maga-is-ascendant-in-gop-swamp-is-on-the-run\/\" title=\"Gaetz: Johnson&#039;s Speakership Shows GOP&#039;s MAGA Rise, Swamp Retreats.\">traditional establishment figure<\/a> against a more radical candidate, possibly reflecting a broader trend in urban electoral politics. Irrespective of the results, the prominence of both candidates in the race signals a shift in voter sentiment and poses questions about the city&#8217;s political future.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>New York City could be on the cusp of electing a radical Muslim socialist as its next mayor &mdash; even though he may not be voters&rsquo; first choice. <\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, electors in the Big Apple will head to the polls to cast ballots in the city&rsquo;s Democrat mayoral primary. With incumbent Mayor Eric Adams set to run as an independent this fall, competition for the Democrat nomination has remained close between two candidates: former Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/andrew-cuomo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Andrew Cuomo<\/a> and state Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani. <\/p>\n<p>While Cuomo &mdash; who oversaw New York&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/06\/09\/andrew-cuomo-can-run-for-nyc-mayor-because-democrats-always-reward-failure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deadly<\/a> Covid-era nursing home scandal &mdash; is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/polls\/nyc-mayoral-primary-election-polls-2025.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">generally considered<\/a> to be the frontrunner in the race, a seemingly rising Mamdani could be propelled to victory thanks to the city&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/ranked-choice-voting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ranked-choice voting<\/a> system. <\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/23\/us-news\/poll-shows-mamdani-overtaking-cuomo-in-nycs-ranked-choice-primary\/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=nypost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York Post<\/a>, a new Emerson College poll found, &ldquo;In its hypothetical initial round of voting, Cuomo&rsquo;s lead shrinks to 3 percentage points, with 35% of likely Democratic voters supporting him compared to 32% for Mamdani and 13% for city Comptroller Brad Lander.&rdquo; Because no candidate garnered more than 50 percent of the vote, the report noted, &ldquo;the ranked choice system kicks in,&rdquo; resulting in Mamdani &ldquo;finally surpass[ing] Cuomo in the eighth round of the simulated ranked choice voting &mdash; 51.8% to 48.2%.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Under&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/ranked-choice-voting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RCV<\/a>, voters rank candidates in order of preference. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of first-choice votes in the first round of voting, the last-place finisher is eliminated, and his votes are reallocated to the voter&rsquo;s second-choice candidate. This process continues until one candidate receives a majority of votes. <\/p>\n<p>If an NYC Democrat primary elector, for example, marks a lesser-known candidate in the race as his first choice, and that candidate gets eliminated after the first round of voting, his vote will go to the candidate he marked as his second choice. Thus, the elector&rsquo;s vote isn&rsquo;t actually going to the candidate he <em>primarily<\/em> wanted to vote for.<\/p>\n<p>Should the results of Emerson&rsquo;s survey prove to be accurate, it&rsquo;s possible that a plurality of NYC Democrat primary voters could select Cuomo as their first choice, only to then end up with Mamdani as their nominated candidate due to ranked-choice voting. Such a potential outcome demonstrates the pitfalls of the RCV system, in which voters&rsquo; first choice candidate is not always the one who ultimately receives their votes. <\/p>\n<p>RCV has been shown to&nbsp;result in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/03\/17\/minnesota-could-be-third-state-to-adopt-ranked-choice-voting-following-alaska-and-maine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inaccurate election results<\/a>&nbsp;and high quantities of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/03\/06\/watch-how-ranked-choice-voting-complicates-elections-and-disenfranchises-voters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">discarded ballots<\/a>. While RCV has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/10\/31\/ranked-choice-voting-is-the-monster-under-the-bed-of-american-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">largely<\/a>&nbsp;been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/15\/communists-cheer-ranked-choice-voting-as-a-weapon-for-defeating-conservatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advanced<\/a>&nbsp;by Democrats as a way of <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/09\/01\/sarah-palin-should-blame-lisa-murkowski-for-her-special-election-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">winning<\/a> seats in which Republican candidates have typically received the most votes in the first round of voting, NYC&rsquo;s embrace of the system shows how it can be utilized by radical leftists to gain power in blue enclaves.<\/p>\n<p>As previously referenced, Cuomo is certainly no saint and by every measure is a leftist in his own right. But Mamdani is equally &mdash; if not more &mdash; radical.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout his campaign, Mamdani has reportedly voiced support for <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/23\/us-news\/zohran-mamdani-wants-to-spend-65m-on-trans-medical-treatment-including-for-minors-if-elected-nyc-mayor\/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=nypost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">taxpayer subsidization<\/a> of so-called &ldquo;trans&rdquo; surgeries (including for minors) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/live-updates\/2025\/06\/04\/1st-nyc-mayoral-primary-debate\/republican-response-00388811\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">health care for illegal aliens<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RNCResearch\/status\/1937225196424835446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/if-nyc-elects-a-far-left-socialist-blame-ranked-choice-voting\/\" title=\"If NYC Elects A Far-Left Socialist, Blame ...\">government-owned grocery stores<\/a><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2025\/05\/27\/zohran-mamdani-policy-pitches-new-york-00369756\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&ldquo;free&rdquo; bus fare and child care<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/03\/09\/us-news\/socialist-mayoral-candidate-zohran-mamdani-plans-for-major-corporate-tax-hikes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hiking<\/a> the corporate tax rate, and limiting the NYPD&rsquo;s &ldquo;duties relating to mental-health crisis intervention, homelessness outreach and traffic ticketing,&rdquo; according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/03\/09\/us-news\/socialist-mayoral-candidate-zohran-mamdani-plans-for-major-corporate-tax-hikes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Post<\/a>. He&rsquo;s also <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/21\/us-news\/socialist-nyc-mayoral-candidate-zohran-mamdani-once-rapped-about-his-love-for-hamas-teror-funding-group-holy-land-five\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">espoused<\/a> pro-Hamas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/globalize-intifada-phrase-stirs-tensions-nyc-campaign-trail-middle-east-conflict-rages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sentiments<\/a> and was previously <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/10\/13\/dozens-demanding-us-end-israel-aid-arrested-outside-schumers-nyc-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">arrested<\/a> for participating in a &ldquo;pro-Palestinian&rdquo; demonstration outside of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer&rsquo;s New York residence in 2023. <\/p>\n<p>Regardless of whether RCV delivers Mamdani a win on Tuesday, that NYC Democrat voters would seemingly make he and Cuomo the two leading contenders to take on Adams and Republican Curtis Sliwa this fall is embarrassing.
