As people were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/world\/isis-behind-deadly-church-suicide-bombing-near-damascus-syrian-interior-minister-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">praying<\/a> during the service, the suspected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/isis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">ISIS<\/a> attacker entered the church, wearing a mask to cover his face, and opened fire on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/christians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Christians<\/a>. However, Syria&rsquo;s interior and foreign ministries blamed the suicide bombing on ISIS.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;A suicide attacker affiliated with the Daesh (IS) terrorist group entered the Saint Elias church in the Dweila area of the capital Damascus where he opened fire, then blew himself up with an explosive belt,&rdquo; Syria&rsquo;s interior ministry <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/world\/rest-of-world\/suicide-attack-on-damascus-church-powerful-blast-heard-in-syria-witnesses-say\/articleshow\/122008045.cms\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Syrian Information Minister Hamza Mostafa called the attack cowardly and said that it ran counter to the &ldquo;virtues&rdquo; that bring people together.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This cowardly act goes against the civic values that brings us together,&rdquo; <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/suicide-bomber-kills-at-least-13-in-syrian-church-near-damascus\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> Mostafa. &ldquo;We will not back down from our commitment to equal citizenship&hellip; and we also affirm the state&rsquo;s pledge to exert all its efforts to combat criminal organizations and to protect society from all attacks threatening its safety.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The suicide bomber did not act alone. According to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/syria-church-attack-damascus-mass-da2ed505d6625fce1fc9de9e88c200a3\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eyewitnesses<\/a> of the attack, at least two other people were involved.
