This method involves alternating between three minutes of slow walking and three minutes of brisk walking, practiced for 30 minutes at least four times a week. Advocates, including TikTok influencer Coach Eugene Teo, argue that it yields significant benefits without disregarding the traditional daily step goal.

A 2007 study showed that IWT is superior to steady walking in improving various health metrics such as blood pressure, blood glucose levels, and body mass index. Additionally, IWT leads to greater leg muscle strength and better aerobic capacity. Experts, including Dr. Ramit Singh Sambyal, note that this method engages the cardiovascular system more dynamically and is particularly helpful for middle-aged and older adults.

Those who find the traditional walking routine monotonous, have mild joint issues, or lack the time for gym workouts, may especially benefit from IWT. The versatility of the intervals allows beginners to adjust the duration to suit their fitness levels, making IWT an accessible and effective exercise strategy.

Japanese influencers have taken to promoting a “new” type of walking that they argue, based on science, is more productive than simply taking 10,000 steps a day.

Known on the net as “Japanese walking” and officially as interval walking training or IWT, this style of walking doesn’t debunk the 10,000 step program, the influencers say. the Post noted in a June 12 report. “Another group walked at a steady, moderate pace, aiming for 8,000 or more steps a day at least four times per week.”

The third group practiced “Japanese walking.”

The researches ultimately discovered that the latter method of exercise was superior, in that it did a better job improving blood pressure, blood glucose levels, and body mass index.

“It also led to the greatest improvements in leg muscle strength and aerobic capacity, which measures the maximum amount of oxygen the body can take in and use during exercise,”
