Initial enthusiasm around Bluesky was driven by users seeking a refuge from perceived toxicity on Twitter following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform. However, just months after a surge in users tied to the 2024 election, Bluesky’s engagement has reportedly dropped by half. Mark Cuban, a notable figure and former active user of Bluesky, has criticized the platform for it’s increasingly toxic environment, were dissenting opinions are dismissed as fascist rhetoric. The article questions the sustainability of Bluesky, arguing that the non-diverse ideologies within the platform may ultimately harm its growth and reflect a historical pattern of liberal users opposing conservative voices. Despite being established as a safe space for progressives, issues of ideological purity have lead to similar toxicity that users fled from on Twitter. The piece suggests that the left’s attempt to create a more hospitable platform might not yield the desired results in the long run.

Well, here’s a shocker, indeed: A thought bubble can get thought-bubbly.

Could you have pictured this? I couldn’t, especially after the very-successful, not-at-all-astroturfed hubbub around X alternative Bluesky after Elon Musk bought Twitter and made it free-speech friendly.

We were all told that Bluesky — a decentralized microblogging platform that launched in 2023 — was going to overtake X because of Elon’s toxicity, since all of the legacy media was headed there. I mean, those platforms would be deplatformed themselves if they got popular enough — but that wouldn’t be a problem with Bluesky, not with its leftist cant or its start as a research project within Twitter itself. Of course, progressive Twitter mobs also policed the discourse themselves, securing high-profile firings that made many people afraid to cross them.

Thus, that national conversation ended up skewed toward liberal views, creating the illusion that their ideas were more popular than they actually were. That’s a major reason that institutions went all-in on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, and why the 2020 Democratic primary field moved so far to the left that Kamala Harris was still struggling to backtrack four years later. All that changed when Musk bought Twitter.

It’s not surprising that progressives want to return to the good old days. But it’s not working, and I’m skeptical it ever will.

And, as the Times of India noted, it’s not as if the responses to Cuban’s post made things any better.

“F***in leave then, p****,” one Bluesky response read. Another: “Go wipe your crocodile tears with a wad of hundreds you t***.”

But here I was told the toxicity was due to Elon Musk and free speech returning on X/Twitter and supposedly scaring away users. Yet, it’s not like Bluesky has much to write home about in that department, too, as Cuban noted on the platform:

This is what happens when the left is given its own bubble moderated by lefties: Eventually, everyone comes for everyone else not sufficiently ideologically pure. Did you foresee this? I certainly didn’t, especially following the significant buzz surrounding Bluesky, an alternative to X that emerged after Elon Musk acquired Twitter and promoted it as a platform for free speech. We were led to believe that Bluesky-a decentralized microblogging site launched in 2023-would surpass X due to Musk’s controversial presence, with many from the traditional media flocking there. The American left was particularly eager to leave behind the established platform and create something new for themselves. After all, they had previously told conservatives that if they were unhappy with existing platforms, they could simply build their own. It seemed unlikely that Bluesky would face deplatforming issues if it gained popularity-especially given its left-leaning nature and origins as a research initiative within Twitter itself. This growth appeared sustainable at first; however, just months after experiencing its largest influx of users post-2024 election, engagement has plummeted by 50% without signs of recovery. Mark Cuban-a billionaire entrepreneur known for his anti-Trump stance-who was once an active participant on Bluesky-believes he understands why: the daily barrage of hateful and “toxic” rhetoric on the platform.

Cuban expressed his concerns in a recent post stating that discussions have devolved from engaging conversations on various topics to an environment where dissenters are labeled as “Nazi fascists.” He noted how even minor disagreements can lead to extreme backlash against those who might challenge any aspect of prevailing opinions within the community. In another post on Bluesky, he remarked about how “the lack of diversity of thought here is really hurting usage,” referencing an article by Megan McArdle in The Washington Post.

McArdle highlighted how the conditions leading to users migrating from Twitter were shaped by its user dynamics; despite having fewer overall users than Meta’s platforms like Instagram or Facebook, Twitter had influential early adopters among progressives who dominated discussions until Elon Musk took over-and many left for Bluesky when moderation policies began suppressing conservative voices and narratives unfavorable to liberal perspectives.

This shift created an illusion favoring liberal viewpoints while stifling opposing ideas through social pressure and high-profile cancellations within progressive circles. Consequently, this skewed national discourse contributed significantly to institutions embracing diversity initiatives more fervently while pushing Democratic candidates further leftward during elections.

Now that Musk has taken control of Twitter-and with progressives yearning for their previous dominance-it’s clear things aren’t going as planned on Bluesky either; Cuban’s observations about toxic interactions reflect this reality well.

Responses from other users only added fuel to this fire: insults directed at Cuban included harsh remarks suggesting he should leave or dismissive comments regarding his wealth-all indicative of similar toxicity found elsewhere online despite claims blaming Musk’s influence for driving away users from X/Twitter.

Ultimately, what we see happening is typical when one ideological group creates its own echo chamber moderated by like-minded individuals: eventually everyone turns against those deemed insufficiently aligned with their beliefs-mirroring past behaviors seen on Twitter before changes occurred under Musk’s leadership-and it’s surprising it took Cuban so long to recognize these patterns

[33651
57706,33371,37388,57705
post-2450520","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-the-western-journal","tag-alternative-investments","tag-business-news","tag-mark-cuban","tag-toxic-culture
["GET
