Notably, the same district saw the highest overall turnout in 2021 when New York City Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/eric-adams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Eric Adams\">Eric Adams<\/a> won the election.<\/p>\n<p>Brooklyn and Manhattan saw the highest early voting turnout in New York City, with 46,792 and 43,259 voters, respectively. These numbers are more than double those of four years ago.<\/p>\n<p>In the past week, the age group that turned out in droves to poll sites was 25-34-year-olds, with 29,557 ballots cast in those first four days.<\/p>\n<p>The early voting numbers among young, liberal, white voters are expected to bode well for New York State Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/3434519\/who-is-zohran-mamdani-socialist-candidate-eric-adams-nyc-mayor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Zohran Mamdani<\/a>, a socialist candidate who wants to freeze rent and provide no-cost childcare to working families if elected.<\/p>\n<p>Mandani is currently in second place, around 10 points behind former Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/f\/?id=00000197-8005-da70-a9ff-a1158e830000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">according to<\/a> a new Marist poll. However, among voters younger than 45 years old, Mamdani leads Cuomo by 34 points.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If it were up 10%, that would be one thing,&rdquo; Laura Tamman, a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >political science professor<\/a> at Pace University, told <em>Gothamist<\/em>. &ldquo;But for those numbers to be double suggests that there&rsquo;s something real and important that&rsquo;s happening.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Mamdani also greatly benefited from a high-profile<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/3444144\/sanders-endorses-zohran-mamdani-nyc-mayor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"> endorsement from Sen. Bernie Sanders <\/a>(I-VT), a fellow socialist politician.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Mamdani and New York City Comptroller Brad Lander <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/3441195\/mamdani-lander-unite-against-cuomo-nyc-mayoral-democratic-primary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"endorsed each other\">endorsed each other<\/a> following the Democratic mayoral primary debate last week.
