Initially a Category 4 storm before landfall,it had winds reaching up to 125 mph.The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Governance warned that Erick could cause severe damage, predicting important rain accumulation and flooding, particularly in the southern states of Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. The hurricane is expected to lead to “life-threatening flooding” and mudslides.

Mexican authorities have urged residents to seek safety, with shelters established for evacuees, and local activities suspended. Previous storms, such as hurricane Otis, have already left communities battered, raising fears among residents. Hurricane Erick marks the first major hurricane of the Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season, which runs from May to November. Emergency officials are on alert as they prepare for potential flooding and damage in the storm’s aftermath.

Hurricane Erick: What to know as it makes landfall in Mexico as Category 3 storm

Hurricane Erick made landfall in Oaxaca, Mexico, on Thursday and, according to the National Hurricane Center, has grown to an “extremely dangerous” storm.

With hurricane season just beginning, and cuts to federal weather agencies planned, storms continue to increase in intensity.

Recommended Stories

Routine SpaceX Starship test ends in explosion in massive setback for Musk’s company

Apology by lawmaker central to Trump beheading post offered, accepted

Change could raise gas prices 65 cents a gallon, audit sought

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted 13-19 named storms this year, with six to 10 expected to become full hurricanes.
