According to <a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/press-release-campaigners-vow-to-fight-extreme-abortion-up-to-birth-amendment-in-the-lords-after-government-bill-hijacked-to-rush-through-seismic-law-change-after-just-two-hours-debate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Right To Life UK<\/a>, members of Parliament &ldquo;hijacked&rdquo; a Crime and Policing Bill &ldquo;to rush through a seismic and unpopular change to abortion law after just two hours&rsquo; debate.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-832140757\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Until now, the U.K. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/1967\/87\/section\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">technically allowed<\/a> elective abortions up to 24 weeks gestation, as long as two doctors agree continuing the pregnancy will harm the woman or her existing children&rsquo;s mental or physical health &mdash; a vague and sweeping provision that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/abortion-statistics-for-england-and-wales-2021\/abortion-statistics-england-and-wales-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hundreds of thousands of U.K. abortions each year<\/a> prove is easily met. The Abortion Act 1967 also permitted the abortion of unborn babies who, while still in the womb, are deemed at high risk for &ldquo;physical or mental abnormalities&rdquo; or to be &ldquo;seriously handicapped&rdquo; if they are born.<\/p>\n<p>Under the latest expansion, which stil needs to pass both the Commons and the Lords before it becomes a law, however, women who induce abortion no matter the trimester would be shielded from criminal consequences.<\/p>\n<p>Proponents of the expansionary amendment, including its proposer Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/europe\/british-lawmakers-vote-decriminalize-abortion-concern-prosecution-wome-rcna213673\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pitched<\/a> it as a way to eliminate the threat of prosecution against pregnant women who abort their babies, especially using back-alley, mail-order methods such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-14822053\/MPs-vote-decriminalise-abortion-law-change.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mifepristone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>  The Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/spuc.org.uk\/spuc-leads-peaceful-demonstration-against-abortion-decriminalisation-outside-parliament-ahead-of-mp-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a> that the amendment means now abortion &ldquo;could be carried out for any reason, including the sex of the baby&rdquo; through all nine months of pregnancy. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There would also be no way to bring an abusive partner who causes the death of an unborn baby to justice,&rdquo; SPUC <a href=\"https:\/\/spuc.org.uk\/spuc-leads-peaceful-demonstration-against-abortion-decriminalisation-outside-parliament-ahead-of-mp-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">explained<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Several conservative MPs, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/17\/world\/europe\/uk-abortion-law.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rebecca Smith<\/a> and Julia Lopez, also warned that the amendment could easily be weaponized to <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >permanently expand abortion permissions<\/a> and embolden abusers.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> <span class=\"qM82z1xWodt5lrkUgDLHmZbNJyGjSCu6Fn7vp03QcEPaT4Y9OweAfI\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I am deeply disturbed by last night&rsquo;s debate and vote to decriminalise abortion.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest change to abortion law in fifty years passes the Commons after a two hour debate. The actual murder of countless more innocent lives, however, is rubber-stamped and even shielded from legal accountability by hundreds of MPs.<\/p>\n<p>Corporate media frame Parliament&rsquo;s latest abortion amendment as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/politics\/abortion-vote-decriminalise-mp-parliament-b2771734.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&ldquo;historic&rdquo;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/uk-abortion-decriminalization-united-states-donald-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">  and &ldquo;common-sense reform.&rdquo;<\/a> Yet even contemplating permitting the murder of unborn humans through all nine months of pregnancy while cracking down on the sincere prayers of Christians is not the mark of monumental progress, it&rsquo;s one of severe decline.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Jordan Boyd is a staff writer at The Federalist and producer of The Federalist Radio Hour.
