The Los Angeles Press Club and independant news site status Coup have taken legal action against the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), alleging that covering protests has become increasingly risky for journalists. the lawsuit claims that the LAPD&#8217;s use of force against reporters violates their constitutional rights.Instances of journalists being injured by police during coverage include cases of reporters shot by &#8220;less lethal&#8221; projectiles. Attorney Caren Sobel, representing the news outlets, highlighted the risks faced by journalists, stating that press credentials did not protect them from harm. The LAPD has opted not too comment on the pending litigation. Gavin Newsom&rsquo;s attempts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/newsom-suing-trump-eisenhower-jfk-bush-also-national-guard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">use federal courts<\/a> to stop the president of the United States from exercising authority over the state&rsquo;s National Guard, an <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >organization representing news media outlets<\/a> is suing the Los Angeles Police Department for its treatment of journalists attempting to cover the violence.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Being a journalist in Los Angeles is now a dangerous profession,&rdquo; \t\t\t\t}); \t\t\t} \t\t<\/script> <\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/firstamendmentcoalition.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/LAPC-v-City-of-LA-Complaint-6-16-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the suit<\/a>, the groups claim they want to for &ldquo;the LAPD to respect the constitutional and statutory rights of journalists engaged in reporting on these protests and inevitable protests to come.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The violence began over resistance to the Trump administration&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/sending-big-guns-trump-greenlights-action-necessary-pacify-la-illegal-criminal-rioters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crackdown on illegal immigration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit cited a long string of injuries suffered by journalists, reportedly at the hands of the LAPD, including a reporter from Queensland, Australia, who was struck in the leg by a &ldquo;less lethal&rdquo; projectile fired by an LAPD officer; a New York Times reporter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/video\/us\/politics\/100000010217680\/a-look-at-the-crackdown-on-the-la-protests.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who claimed<\/a> she was hit by &ldquo;crowd-control munitions&rdquo; fired by police; and a reporter for the <a href=\"https:\/\/capitalandmain.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">liberal website Capital &amp; Main<\/a> who <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/jeremotographs.bsky.social\/post\/3lr7uewktsk2x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says he was<\/a> hit by a &ldquo;projectile&rdquo; fired by an LAPD officer.<\/p>\n<p>Caren Sobel, an attorney representing the news outlets, said the problem is clear, according to the L.A. Times.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;You have people holding up their press credentials saying, &lsquo;I&rsquo;m press,&rsquo; and they still got shot,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Times, Sobel is a veteran of court fights with the LAPD stemming from George Floyd riots of 2020, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/defense-attorney-calls-blacks-murder-police-lapd-investigating\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hit Los Angeles<\/a> just as they hit other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mostly-peaceful-riots-soar-1b-damages-setting-new-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">major American cities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She &ldquo;filed a similar action in the wake of the LAPD&rsquo;s response to the 2020 protests on behalf of Black Lives Matter-L.A. and others who contended that LAPD caused scores of injuries by firing hard-foam projectiles,&rdquo; the newspaper reported.<\/p>\n<p>News about the lawsuit did not exactly get a sympathetic response from many social media users.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Lame.
