This move is celebrated by anti-abortion advocates as a significant victory, following a similar provision that was passed in the House version of the bill. If enacted, the legislation would deny federal funding for both abortion services and related healthcare from facilities that conduct elective abortions, lasting for the next ten years. Currently, federal funds cannot be allocated for abortions except in specific circumstances, but healthcare centers can receive funding even if thay provide elective abortion services.<\/p>\n<p>Planned Parenthood, which is the largest abortion provider in the U.S., conducts over 400,000 abortions each year and also supplies numerous other healthcare services. The proposed measures could led to the closure of nearly 200 Planned Parenthood centers, affecting millions of patients. One major remaining question, though, is whether the measure can survive Democratic procedural challenges as Republicans advance the overall legislation through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/budget-reconciliation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">budget reconciliation<\/a> process.<\/p>\n<p>Under current law, federal Medicaid dollars cannot go toward abortions except to save the life of the mother or if the pregnancy is a result of rape or incest, but they can go to health centers that provide elective abortions.<\/p>\n<p>Anti-abortion advocates have long pushed for the prohibition of taxpayer funding through Medicaid for abortion providers. They argue that any money given to an <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >abortion provider effectively subsidizes abortion<\/a> because money is fungible. They say that such funding covers the costs associated with an abortion as well as whatever service the reimbursement is ostensibly for.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation does not specifically address Planned Parenthood by name, but the organization is the leading abortion provider in the United States, providing more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/about-us\/facts-figures\/annual-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"402,000 abortions\">402,000 abortions<\/a> annually, according to its 2023-24 report. Planned Parenthood also provides millions of STI testing and treatment services, as well as contraception, which, under current law, can receive federal Medicaid reimbursement.<\/p>\n<p>Upon the passage of the abortion defunding measure in the House, Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Alexis McGill Johnson said that including that language in the bill would shutter nearly 200 Planned Parenthood centers nationwide that serve 1.1 million patients.<\/p>\n<p>The PPFA did not respond to the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>&rsquo;s request for comment on the Senate&rsquo;s version of the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Defunding Planned Parenthood has become a rallying cry for the anti-abortion movement since the overturning of <em>Roe v.
