return false;\" title=\"Printer Friendly, PDF &amp; Email\"><span id=\"printfriendly-text2\" class=\"pf-button-text\"><i class=\"mdi mdi-printer\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<p>The Supreme Court ruled in favor of nuns fighting against New York&rsquo;s abortion mandate that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-york-ag-quits-spy-campaign-against-pro-life-activists\/\" title=\"New York AG Quits Spy Campaign Against Pro-Life Activists\">forced religious organizations<\/a> to pay for employee abortions.<\/p>\n<p>The Little Sisters of the Poor, a Catholic <a href=\"https:\/\/littlesistersofthepoorqueens.org\/mission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">organization <\/a>that serves the elderly, fought the state on its abortion mandate that violates religious liberties for years, but multiple New York courts have <a href=\"https:\/\/becketfund.org\/case\/diocese-of-albany-v-harris\/?section=caseDetail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ruled<\/a> in favor of the abortion mandate.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-857398586\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>New York <a href=\"https:\/\/becketfund.org\/case\/diocese-of-albany-v-harris\/?section=caseDetail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mandated<\/a> in 2017 that employers pay for &ldquo;not just abortifacients, but even surgical abortions&rdquo; as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/workers-health-care-restored-after-union-bosses-back-down\/\" title=\"Workers\u2019 Health Care Restored After Union Bosses Back Down\">employee health care<\/a>. The state had indicated that it would protect religious groups, but &ldquo;narrowed the exemption to protect only religious entities that primarily employ and serve people of their own faith,&rdquo; according to Becket Religious Liberty for All. The only religious exemption was for &ldquo;religious groups that primarily teach religion and primarily serve and hire those who share their faith,&rdquo; a Becket <a href=\"https:\/\/becketfund.org\/media\/breaking-supreme-court-rules-in-favor-of-nuns-fighting-new-york-abortion-mandate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>In response Catholic nuns led a group of religious groups spanning different denominations who banded together to push back against the state forcing Christians to provide insurance plans that pay for killing babies as &ldquo;health care.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The mandate &ldquo;violat[ed] their deepest religious convictions about the sanctity of life,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/becketfund.org\/case\/diocese-of-albany-v-harris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according <\/a>to Becket. &ldquo;New York wants to browbeat nuns into paying for abortions for the great crime of serving all those in need,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/becketfund.org\/media\/breaking-supreme-court-rules-in-favor-of-nuns-fighting-new-york-abortion-mandate\/\">said<\/a> Eric Baxter, vice president and senior counsel of Becket.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021 the religious groups appealed to the Supreme Court, which &ldquo;granted the petition, vacated the bad rulings from the New York state courts, and told the state courts to reconsider the case,&rdquo; according to Becket. Instead, New York ignored SCOTUS and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/06\/16\/supreme-court-abortion-insurance-religious-employers\/84168738007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">codified<\/a> the mandate into law in 2022. In response, the religious groups again appealed to SCOTUS.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;For the second time in four years, the Supreme Court has made clear that bully tactics like these have no place in our nation or our law. We are confident that these religious groups will finally be able to care for the most vulnerable consistent with their beliefs,&rdquo; Baxter <a href=\"https:\/\/becketfund.org\/media\/breaking-supreme-court-rules-in-favor-of-nuns-fighting-new-york-abortion-mandate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>SCOTUS <a href=\"https:\/\/becketnewsite.s3.amazonaws.com\/20250616093307\/Supreme-Court-Order-List-6-16-2025-Diocese-of-Albany.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overturned<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/justice-alito-moves-up-deadline-for-supreme-court-briefing-in-pennsylvania-lawsuit-to-flip-the-election\/\" title=\"Justice Alito Moves Up Deadline For ... Briefing in Pennsylvania Lawsuit to Flip the Election\">lower court&#038;rsquo<\/a>;s 2024 ruling in favor of its abortion mandate, and &ldquo;the case is remanded to the Court of Appeals of New York for further consideration in light of Catholic <em>Charities Bureau, Inc. v. Wisconsin Labor &amp; Industry Review Commission<\/em>,&rdquo; where SCOTUS ruled that &ldquo;Wisconsin <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/06\/05\/scotus-wisconsin-supreme-court-violated-a-catholic-charitys-first-amendment-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">violated<\/a> a Catholic Charity&rsquo;s First Amendment rights, as The Federalist&rsquo;s Brianna Lyman reported.<\/p>\n<p>Just before the nuns won their case, SCOTUS decided that the &ldquo;government cannot use schemes like New York&rsquo;s to discriminate among religious people,&rdquo; <a href=\"https:\/\/becketfund.org\/media\/breaking-supreme-court-rules-in-favor-of-nuns-fighting-new-york-abortion-mandate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to Becket Religious Liberty for All.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are confident that New York will finally get the message and stop discriminating against religious objectors,&rdquo;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/becketfund.org\/media\/breaking-supreme-court-rules-in-favor-of-nuns-fighting-new-york-abortion-mandate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> Noel J.
