Voters overwhelmingly believe the Garden State is on the wrong track under &ldquo;one-party Democrat rule,&rdquo; the campaign&rsquo;s memo added, touting poll results showing 54% of residents believe New Jersey is headed in the wrong direction versus 33% saying the state is on the right track.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the two candidates<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/3437797\/new-jersey-gubernatorial-race-ciattarelli-sherrill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"> won their respective primary races<\/a><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/3437797\/new-jersey-gubernatorial-race-ciattarelli-sherrill\/\" target=\"_blank\">,<\/a>&nbsp;advancing<\/span> them to compete in the general election as the state decides whether to cement an apparent trend to the Right during the 2025 election.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Make no mistake that this is a &lsquo;CHANGE&rsquo; election and Ciattarelli is the CHANGE candidate,&rdquo; the Ciattarelli campaign memo announcing the polling reads.<\/p>\n<p>Republican strategists<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/3230358\/new-battlegrounds-gop-looks-lock-down-trump-gains-new-jersey-virginia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\"> have pointed <\/a>to the GOP&rsquo;s gains in New Jersey&rsquo;s 2021 gubernatorial election to argue that President Donald Trump&rsquo;s record performance there during the 2024 election is just another indicator that a political shift is sweeping a historically Democratic stronghold.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Murphy, a Democrat, was reelected by barely 3 percentage points three years ago after coming to power in 2017 by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-battlegrounds-gop-looks-to-lock-down-trumps-gains-in-new-jersey-and-virginia-washington-examiner\/\" title=\"New battlegrounds? ... looks to lock down Trump\u2019s gains in New ... and Virginia - Washington Examiner\">resounding 14-point margin<\/a> of victory.&nbsp;Murphy&rsquo;s slim victory in 2021 came amid a competitive challenge from Ciattarelli.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Trump flipped multiple counties red, offering the best performance for a Republican presidential candidate in over three decades and fueling hopes that New Jersey could become the next swing state.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, some Republican leaders in the state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/3437797\/new-jersey-gubernatorial-race-ciattarelli-sherrill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">have urged the GOP<\/a> not to get too far ahead of themselves in predicting an easy victory this fall.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Candidate and former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli discusses issues at the New Jersey Republican gubernatorial primary debate, at NJ PBS Studios, Wednesday, May 7, 2025, in Newark, New Jersey.
