The legislation proposes to suspend federal financial assistance for cities or states that do not honor ICE detainers or that restrict communication with the Department of Homeland Security. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, and Sheri Biggs, R-S.C., on Tuesday introduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/gill.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/reps-gill-biggs-bill-uphold-dhs-law-and-order-sanctuary-cities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mobilizing Against Sanctuary Cities Act<\/a>, which &ldquo;blocks federal financial assistance for one year to any city or state that refuses to honor ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] detainers.&rdquo; The legislation also prohibits state and local governments restricting communications with the Department of Homeland Security.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;If any city refuses to comply with the laws of our nation, blatantly works against the Department of Homeland Security, and wastes billions of taxpayer dollars shielding illegal aliens at the risk of American citizens, then they should be cut off from receiving even a penny of federal funding,&rdquo; Gill said in a joint <a href=\"https:\/\/gill.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/reps-gill-biggs-bill-uphold-dhs-law-and-order-sanctuary-cities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A similar Republican-led<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/780#:~:text=Introduced%20in%20House%20(02\/02\/2023)&amp;text=This%20bill%20imposes%20penalties%20on,assist%20federal%20immigration%20enforcement%20actions.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> bill<\/a> introduced by Rep. Jeff Duncan of South Carolina died in the last session of Congress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Flouting the Law<\/h2>\n<p>Sanctuary cities, such as Los Angeles, bar local police from helping ICE and other federal law enforcement officials with immigration-related operations. In November, the Los Angeles City Council <a href=\"https:\/\/cityclerk.lacity.org\/lacityclerkconnect\/index.cfm?fa=ccfi.viewrecord&amp;cfnumber=23-0243\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unanimously voted<\/a> to officially designate the nation&rsquo;s second-largest city a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/news\/local\/los-angeles-sanctuary-city-ordiance-city-council-immigration-trump\/3564407\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sanctuary city<\/a>, &ldquo;prohibiting city resources or personnel from being used to help federal enforcement of immigration laws,&rdquo; NBC4 Los Angeles <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/news\/local\/la-council-to-finalize-and-adopt-sanctuary-city-ordinance\/3573823\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>. Gov. Gavin Newsom&rsquo;s proposed state budget for 2025-2026 relies on north of $170 billion in federal funds, the think tank <a href=\"https:\/\/calbudgetcenter.org\/resources\/federal-funds-drive-one-third-of-californias-state-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Golden State is projected to spend more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcra.com\/article\/california-undocumented-resident-healthcare-fund\/64168502\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$8.4 billion<\/a> on taxpayer-funded Medicaid health benefits for illegal immigrants, according to the California Department of Finance. That&rsquo;s more than <a href=\"https:\/\/budget.house.gov\/press-release\/icymi-newsom-extends-free-healthcare-to-700000-illegal-immigrants-despite-record-budget-deficit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$5 billion higher<\/a> than originally estimated, the U.S. House Budget Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/budget.house.gov\/press-release\/california-to-spend-84-billion-this-year-on-health-care-for-illegal-aliens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a> earlier this year. Deep blue California last year launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/budget.house.gov\/press-release\/california-to-spend-84-billion-this-year-on-health-care-for-illegal-aliens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first state<\/a> program to <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >provide taxpayer-funded health care &#038;mdash<\/a>; via Medicaid &mdash; &ldquo;to all illegal aliens in the state,&rdquo;&nbsp;as the Budget Committee also <a href=\"https:\/\/budget.house.gov\/press-release\/california-to-spend-84-billion-this-year-on-health-care-for-illegal-aliens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nationally, the Congressional Budget Office reports the Biden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/budget.house.gov\/press-release\/cbo-medicaid-spending-on-illegal-aliens-has-cost-taxpayers-over-162-billion-under-open-border-czar-harris\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spent<\/a> more than $16.2 billion on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kamala-harris-laughs-after-being-asked-if-u-s-will-accept-more-ukrainian-refugees\/\" title=\"Kamala Harris Laughs After Being Asked If U.S. Will Accept More Ukrainian Refugees\">emergency health care<\/a> for illegal immigrants.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Sanctuary&rdquo; has cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars. According to a report by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairus.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Federation for American Immigration Reform<\/a>, &ldquo;At the start of 2023, the net cost of illegal immigration for the United States &mdash; at the federal, state, and local levels &mdash; was at least $150.7&nbsp;billion.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Illegal immigration costs each American taxpayer $1,156 per year ($957 after factoring in taxes paid by illegal aliens),&rdquo; FAIR&rsquo;s report, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairus.org\/issue\/publications-resources\/fiscal-burden-illegal-immigration-united-states-taxpayers-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&ldquo;The Fiscal Burden of Illegal Immigration on United States Taxpayers 2023,<\/a>&rdquo; estimated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>&lsquo;Follow Federal Law&rsquo;<\/h2>\n<p>The Trump administration is going after improper and illegal use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-is-off-to-a-fast-start-with-executive-orders-but-does-he-know-whats-in-them-and-can-he-explain-how-any-help-the-average-american\/\" title=\"Biden Is Off to a Fast Start with Executive Orders But Does He know What\u2019s In Them and Can He Explain How Any Help the Average American?\">federal taxpayer dollars<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Immigration and Customs Enforcement&rsquo;s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) field office in Los Angeles issued a subpoena to California&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdss.ca.gov\/inforesources\/cash-assistance-for-immigrants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants.<\/a> The CAPI program issues benefits to illegal immigrants ineligible for Social Security assistance because of their immigration status.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The subpoena requests all records from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services &mdash; who administers the state program &mdash; to determine if ineligible illegal aliens received Supplemental Security Income (SSI) from the Social Security Administration, between January 2021 to present,&rdquo; the Department of Homeland Security announced in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2025\/05\/12\/department-homeland-security-investigates-state-california-providing-federal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Sanctuary jurisdictions that shirk federal immigration law and enforcement, too, could pay the price under the bill introduced this week. Biggs said the Mobilizing Against Sanctuary Cities Act makes it simple: &ldquo;If you want federal tax dollars, you need to follow federal law.&rdquo;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Americans are watching sanctuary cities spiral out of control, while cartel-backed traffickers smuggle poison into our neighborhoods.
