Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) defeated five fellow <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/democrats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Democrats<\/a> during Tuesday night&rsquo;s primary to secure the party&rsquo;s nomination as she seeks to become the next <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/new-jersey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">New Jersey<\/a> governor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Associated Press<\/em> called the race for Sherrill at<strong> <\/strong>8:39 p.m. Eastern time, less than an hour after the polls closed. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), New Jersey Education Association President&nbsp;Sean Spiller, and former state Senate President Steve Sweeney rounded out the top five finishers. Gottheimer had 12% of the vote, a blow to the congressman who spent the most on ads supporting him.<\/p>\n<p>Sherrill, who has represented New Jersey&rsquo;s 11th District since 2018, was the Democratic front-runner heading into the primary, receiving more than twice the support of her opponents in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/emersoncollegepolling.com\/may-2025-new-jersey-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">poll<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She will face <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/state\/3436596\/jack-ciattarelli-wins-new-jersey-republican-primary-governor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Republican Jack Ciattarelli\">Republican Jack Ciattarelli<\/a>, who received 67.5% of the vote at the time the <em>Associated Press<\/em> called the GOP primary. His win was expected given President Donald Trump&rsquo;s endorsement, though it could backfire in a state where registered Republicans are vastly outnumbered by Democrats.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ciattarelli and Sherrill will now head to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/donald-trump-dominates-in-2024-general-election-odds\/\" title=\"Donald ... Dominates in 2024 ... Odds\">general election matchup<\/a> on Nov. 4 to determine who will replace term-limited Gov. Phil Murphy (D-NJ). Trump came within 6 percentage points of winning the traditionally blue state last year, and Republicans see an opportunity to flip the state in November.<\/p>\n<p>Policies from Trump&rsquo;s White House and the GOP-led Congress have colored the two gubernatorial primaries of the 2025 off-year cycle, with the other upcoming in Virginia.&nbsp;The two states&rsquo; general elections are considered a temperature gauge for how Republicans are faring and offer a preview of the 2026 congressional midterm elections.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have performed well in the handful of 2025 state races, flipping Republican seats and districts in places such as Omaha, Wisconsin, New York, and Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<p>The gubernatorial contest had some twists.<\/p>\n<p>Baraka was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/crime\/3406996\/newark-mayor-ras-baraka-arrested-protest-lawmakers-stormed-ice-prison\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">charged with trespassing<\/a> after he, along with some House Democrats, protested outside the Newark Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility that was holding arrested illegal immigrants. The charges have since been dropped.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/state\/3436143\/affordability-key-policy-issue-new-jersey-gubernatorial-primary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">AFFORDABILITY EMERGES AS KEY POLICY ISSUE IN NEW JERSEY GUBERNATORIAL PRIMARY<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fulop was the only Democratic candidate to run with a <a href=\"https:\/\/stevenfulop.com\/assembly-candidates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">slate of allied candidates<\/a> who are running for the state Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>Because of New Jersey rules,<strong> <\/strong>Sherrill<strong> <\/strong>will only have to give up her House seat if she loses.
